I doubt this person legally purchased these guns. But lets address your post (even though it might be heading into off-topic subjects) - People with severe mental illness are not permitted to buy or own guns per Federal Regulation. NICS will collect information from mental health professionals, but submission is all voluntary. And also, lets say the mentally ill individual was not even identified by a health professional as mentally ill.
This is the issue - the identification and publication of mentally ill individuals conflicts with the civil rights and freedoms of individuals. Not in terms of gun ownership, it has nothing to do with gun ownership, but in terms of individual privacy. What are we asking? That doctors are required to report all mental health issues to Big Brother? What else will the government do with this information? Or do we require a government appointed doctor to do mental health screening to all citizens once a year to report to some Washington Beauracracy? Do we let the government identify exactly who is mentally ill? Imagine all these liberal civil libereties legal groups to issue lawsuits like crazy even if the reason is to identify the mentally ill for gun control purposes.
Everyone agrees, even 2nd ammendment proponents, that guns do not belong in the hands of the mentally ill. The problem is finding a solution that does not conflict with the rights of everyone, even non-gunowners.
Automatic Weapon fact - no legally owned or obtained fully automatic weapon has been used in a crime by a civilian since the times of Bonnie and Clyde and John Dillenger (one murder is on record as committed by a police officer with a PD issued auto assault weapon). That's a fact. If this person somehow went through all the BTAF regulations and checks and license fees and bought a very expensive (because it would have to be pre-86 made and essentially a collector item) automatic weapon and used it in this crime, it would be the first time since 1936.
