A Berkshire man has been jailed for posting abusive messages online about a schoolgirl after she committed suicide.

Sean Duffy, 25, of Reading, was handed an 18-week sentence for posts on social networking sites about Worcestershire teenager Natasha MacBryde.

He previously pleaded guilty at Reading Magistrates' Court to sending indecent or offensive communications.

Police said Duffy also posted abuse about dead teenagers in Northumberland, Gloucestershire and Staffordshire.

Sick, sick, sick. I do not understand why people do things like this. The "It doesn't count because it's teh internetz and 'we do it for the lulz'" mentality? Like the Nikki Catsouras story ... that poor family went through hell because of people like this.

I'm glad at least some justice was served in this case.

In all seriousness, and despite my post above, I think this is ridiculous. When you sit down at your computer and get on the internet, you are as much as entering another world. To be honest, someone who kills themselves over something they read on the net is a pretty weak minded individual anyway. Something as simple as "internet trolling" should never result in real world consequences especialy when there is a very simple remedy for the victim......it's called the off button.

This isn't a case of somebody killing themselves as a result of internet trolls. What he's in prison for is for sending insulting troll messages to bereaved families of teenagers who had just died, not all from suicide. This is an example of what I'm talking about:

I'm not sure if prison is a very constructive punishment to be honest. A bit of public humiliation in having to meet the victims' families would have done the trick.

Wish we could do that to the Westboro Baptist Church fiends.

So what big deal. The creators of those tribute sites I'm sure had the ability to moderate them. I do agree with what you said about having to meet the family of those he trolled though, if a punishment had to be given, that would have been suitable.

On another note, the picture you provided with your article above looks like something you can commonly find posted on 4chan /b/ { random } It's no surprise that a sleezball who posts there would do something like this. That site is the underbelly of the internet. Pure trash!

let me applaud you for being one of those strong-minded people who can guarantee that as a 10-16 year-old you'd be immune to cyber-bullying and harassment.
