Why are so many crimes committed in Florida? Yes, it is a large, populated state, with a mixed ethbic group, and yes, drug use, especially prescription drug use is high. But this is not any different than Texas, California, or even New York...but it seems like every time I read about a horrible crime, it is always in Flordia!
I lived there for four years. Once, I was walking in an area, and two people were fighting, yellingat each other in the front yard, both had machetes!!! I was terrified, sure I would see a double homocide, my friend was unconcerned, he said, "oh, no big deal, they both have machetes, that way no one gets hurt..." Okay. Whatever.
Jasper, I just read the story about the serial killer at Boca Town centre..used to live 15 minutes from there. There were alot of property crimes there 10 yrs ago, but wow, the violence is on the rise.
Florida is a big mix, of people and I dont just mean from other countries, but as a microcosm, we had 8 sets of neighbors in 7 years, in general I think there is a disconnect, teenagers and people don't feel connected. There is no "community sense" per se.
If you ever watch this film: "Bully", it showed the area of S. florida where that murder was committed. The film was very good at portraying the area of the Broward area and Hollywood Florida suburbs, very stark and alienating.
One issue I noticed in Florida, was the disparity between wealth and poverty. You are either really rich there, or scraping by, not a whole lot in between.

Very true but Jasper is making the point that the media seems to make it look like Florida is some crime capital, which of course, we know it's not. IDK, maybe it's all that sunshine....too much melatonin.

Depends on where you go in Florida. Volusia County.....Daytona Beach, Port Orange, Ormond Beach and surrounding areas very middle class. Target, Walmart shopping, beautiful Beach.
Daytona is pretty much the same, but not quite as stark as Miami or West Palm Beach. Yes, here are middle class folks everywhere...and I am sure many problems there are not due solely to socio-economic issues.
The Zimmerman case...again, Florida! Casey Anthony, Florida. And so many child killings...I can't even remember them all, but it just seems like more are in Florida...anyone else think that? Any guesses as to why that is?

I don't know if they really have more child killing or we hear more about the Florida abductions and killings. Could depend on what cases the media focuses on.
