Her ex-husband is an inhuman beast.

But the article is bizarre because the victim, who was beaten with a baseball bat and had industrial lye poured all over body, leaving her with a disfigured face and body and blind in one eye is quoted as saying that "she's in a better place than she was before the attack" and ""I'm so much more blessed than I was then." ?

I would use the word "cruel" to describe the guy. I'm not sure what to make of what she's been saying since. I hope she's finding positives in her situation, of course, but for me, forgiveness would not be much of an option.

I found this to be peculiar too, but I guess she means that now she is in a better place because she is free of him, most likely he has been abusing her for many years.
