This happens every new year, but it's still kind of bracing to read a rundown of overnight violence on December 31 to January 1.

Gunfire rings in a deadly New Year across US

Among other incidents...

·A shooting in downtown Sacramento killed two and wounded three others.

·A shooting at a bar in Columbus, Georgia left 1 dead and six wounded.

·Three separate shootings in Philadelphia killed three and wounded two others.

·Chicago saw at least 1 murder and eleven non-fatal gunshot injuries overnight.

·1 person was shot dead and four others wounded at a convenience store in Lansing, Michigan.

·1 person was shot dead and three others wounded at a gas station in Lorain, Ohio.

·A shooting at the American Legion hall in Clayton, North Carolina killed one teenager and wounded two others.

Welcome to America, I guess...

Want to know the best part? Those are merely the cases you KNOW about. There are literally thousands of others, which did not make the papers/news, which were worse.

Yep, welcome to America and the world.

Good point, Skel!

Look, New Year's Eve is just like hunting season -- either the woods or the bars are going to be full of armed drunks. It's the American way.

Among developed first-world nations, we definitely had the most shooting incidents and murders to ring in the new year. If we include certain developing nations, then we look a bit better, but part of the point of living in a developed nation is that we shouldn't have to do that.

I am from NYC and having worked in the Square for years agree they were way out of control this year. Saw people still drinking at 7 am, there was more then one arrested and saw 1 young woman taken out on a strecher. In addition to 2 more laying on the floor and more puddles of puke to step over. Big difference from just last year.

No. We had the most REPORTED shooting incidents to ring in the new year. Our news media feeds on this sort of thing. Other countries, its merely another day. You have no clue what the murder, shooting rate in the former Soviet Union or China was. You won't hear the truth; nor ever see it. Same holds true for South American countries. A person shot and thrown in the gutter, doesn't make the news in the US, if it occurred in Bogota, Belfast, et al.

So, don't just automatically jump down the throats of the American's because of our "violent culture." Our culture isn't much more violent then anyone else's and, I'd argue less then most. However, we cover everything with the media and its all open. Other countries cover up the world; including murders, rapes, et al.

China and Russia are generally not regarded as "first-world developed nations." China, though, doesn't have a high rate of murder in general, and there are plenty of western expats who would have been blogging about it had bodies been laying out in the street on January 1, at least in the central areas of the major cities.

Our closest peer nation would be Canada, and though Canada has around 1/9th of the US population, it seemed to have fewer than 1/9th of the reported shootings and homicides from around the US. Which is to be expected, since Canada's overall murder rate is usually around 2.5 to 3 times lower than ours in any given year.

All the apocalypse predictions that never happened would be cause for celebration.

Two were shot and murdered in Reading Pa. before the sun came up on New Years day.
Sadly in Maryland a Lititz pa girl was killed when a bullet hit her that had been fired by some A HOLE who fired their gun up into the air celebrating New years Eve.
