The victim was critically injured during morning attack. Firefighters subdued the suspect at the scene

A deranged man hacked his 23-year-old wife in the head with a meat cleaver on a Manhattan sidewalk Sunday, critically injuring her before firefighters came to her rescue.

Firefighter Jose Ortiz, 51, an 18-year FDNY veteran, witnessed the start of the attack from the open door of the Engine 9/Ladder 6 firehouse about 10:20 a.m.

I am in NY and saw this in the newspaper. Those men saved her life. Hope she recovers soon.

Domestic violence is a huge problem. Spouses attacking each other and related home violence account for many 911 calls in a day.

I saw a short article about it this morning in our paper, but unfortunately it was just on the brief section, so there were no details. I don't know if domestic violence is really on the rise or if it is back to the usual: 24/7 media coverage plus the willingness to expose a partner, compared to years ago when people didn't want anyone to know what went on behind closed doors.. They were basically to ashamed. Not everything in todays world is good, but the awareness of domestic violence is good. Hopefully more people will get help.

He doesn't sound like he needs batterer's intervention, though; they make him sound as if he needed involuntary hospitalization.
