This is a very sad case. What to do with a 12 yo though? I'm sure he will get psychiatric help? I wonder what is the outcome in cases where someone so young is locked up and if they can live a law abiding life when they get out? That is incredibly young and I'm sure with some intensive help he could become a functioning member of society. It would be interesting to know of similar cases and the outcome. I remember reading about Mary Bell in the UK who killed two little boys when she was 10. She was 23 when she was released and shop lifted because she wanted to go back to jail. This is quite an interesting read.

I'm sure other people have read the Ann Rule book If You Really Love Me. Cinnamon Brown was manipulated by her psychopathic father into killing her step-mother when she was 14 years old. She was released at 21. Not sure how her life has turned out though.

Young Killer in Murder Plot Freed : Legal system: Cinnamon Brown, then 14, was imprisoned for shooting her stepmother. She later revealed that 1985 slaying was set up by her father. - Los Angeles Times

I live in the Uk and possibly the most prolific case similar to this one in being it was perpretrated by 2 ten year olds is the Jamie Bulger case,Jamie was 2 years old when he was abducted from a shopping centre by the boys,Robert Thompson and John Venebles, they beat and tortured him until he died from his horrific injuries. In the UK we have no exceptions which lead to children being tried as adults not something i agree with if im honest,if at any age you put another human through the ordeal that Jamie went through you are tried as an adult,.When the boys reached 18 they were released with new identies that were protected and given new lives against public outcry,One of them has since re offended in this instance downloading pornographice images of children and sentenced again to prison and his identy was released as he imself had compromised it.
At the time of the cime and at trial it was alleged that both boys came from disfunctional families had no boundaries were allowed to stay out played on video games and watched horror films that had 18 certifications.Robert Thompson was considered to be the ring leader with venebles portrayed as his unwitting accomplice(venebles is the one who reoffended).
Neither boys served hard time for the crime they were in a selection of secure units for children so never really paid the price for the crime they comitted.
I personally have always had a keen intrest in forensic Physcology and the nature v nurture debate as the identities of these boys are protected we will neevr really know if Thompson was rehabilitated back to society we know that venebles wasnt as he offended further and will continue to do so.
As is this case was the brother ever flagged up as having violent tendencies, had there ever been any reports made against him?did the parents feel the child was in danger being with the brother?,
I do feel that each case shoule be judged on its own merits but i strongly agree with adult trials for kids who murder and i feel that prison time as opposed to a softly softly approach is sometimes the only way to make them see that all actions have reactions.I woukld be intrested to hear the backstory of this case as ive only just joined the forum and am not completly in the picture of this awful crime

Reminds me of the Jon bennet Ramsay case. Did the murdered daughter receive preferential treatment from the parents in this case as well?

It's actually not that rare. Kids tend to assume they're the least loved and -- thinking like the little kids they are -- figure that all they have to do is get the other sib out of the way so they can get some appreciation for a change. Like adult criminals -- many of whom reason like 12-year-olds -- they figure it will be easy enough to avoid getting caught. LOTS of perfectly normal kids think about it without acting on it. This one, for whatever reason, decided this really was his best option.

My take on this is sarcasm toward the light sentence the brother will receive. This poster is disgusted at the thought that a 12 year old can murder an 8 year old and pretty much "get away with it" due to his age.
