showing two boys about 12... one skinny and one chubby. Which one was the suspect? At the time I thought they both looked devious. The video was on one of the 3 cable news channels showing the funeral and these two were sitting together and the larger boy was putting his arm around the skinny boy. Maybe they were in on this together. Step child jealousy?

They say he'll be out by 25. Why no life in prison?
He could only get life if he was tried as an adult. I have seen 14 years old tried as adults and receive life. If he is tried as a juvenile usually they are out by 21.
A 14 year old, that lives here, killed his grandparents then burned their house down with their bodies inside. He was tried as an adult and received life. The ACLU has come in on the case and attempted to intervene on his behalf and get him out of prison.

That's awful. I don't know how I feel about that - seems like the 14yr old should get life in prison, but then you have the youth aspect. I can't imagine what frame of mind he was in.
As for the 12 yr old brother, really sad to see that development. I totally believed it was an intruder at first. I'm anxious to read what evidence they found that points to the brother.

I said the same two things (in a cynical way) the day they announced she was found dead by her 12-year-old brother. It may just be sibling rivalry that went too far – we'll see.
Why did the police end up on a wild goose chase for an adult intruder?
They didn't. They knew the child was lying from the beginning. HOWEVER, you have to follow all of the leads. Had they just focused in on the 12 yr old, people would be throwing hissy fits saying the police weren't doing their jobs.
The parents of the 12 yr old still do not believe their son had anything to do with it.
For the others, in California its not possible, under the law, for persons 12 yrs and younger to commit crimes (there are certain exceptions to this). If you know anything about this case, other then just the news reports, you know the 12 yr old tampered with evidence, concealed evidence, and falsified evidence. These issues, besides his false story show he was actually thinking about the crime and did more then just a "heat of the passion" act. Hence the arrest.
I can gurantee you all the district attorney of that county took several days, and even weeks, reading and going over the evidence. Probably even consulting many other persons, before reaching the decision to have the 12 yr old arrested. The police DID NOT arrest this 12 yr old, without having the district attorney's "blessing" before doing so.
This is a VERY complex case, if you know anything of the "back story." He won't get a jury trial, just in front of a juvenile judge and the maximum amount of time he can be sentences to The California Youth of Authority is until age 25 (he can, of course, be released prior to that).
I hate to say it, however, there are NO winners in this situation. EVERYONE loses. The parents, the police, the community, and the criminal justice system.
