How much "true crime" is false?

Is "true crime" a misnomer, since much of it deals with rumors and claims impossible to prove?

As long as you say 'this is an impossible to prove rumor,' or 'this is my theory based on these known facts,' you're in the clear as far as I'm concerned. After that point you're into the realm of speculation, if not fantasy.
