I have gotten that call many times . They always say they are calling about my computer that is running Windows...I always say "which computer? I have several that run Windows". This throws them and they stammer around and then just repeat "your computer with Windows". They fun and games begin from that moment on .
Lighten up, don't take offense, don't feel threatened and have some fun with it! You can lead those folks on a merry chase before they finally hang up on you.
If I know its a scam, I lead them along as long as I can. I've got a few people going for over 10 minutes. I figure every minute I keep them occupied is a minute they aren't taking money from someone who doesn't know any better.
There are websites you can find using Google that allow you to add a phone number and a description for scam or ripoff calls.
I got that call and jerked him around a little. I played very dumb and almost got him to where I did what he wanted me to do( at least he thought I did, I was just playing along) and then I said it crashed and I got a blue screen. He tried later a few times but I just hung up after that immediately.
I'm not going to **** off some idiot just trying to make a dishonest buck even if he is thousands of miles away. Karma will get him, he'll find a cobra in his bed.
Very commons scams. This guy who called the OP was especially bold. best defense: Don't answer strange numbers. If it's someone you know they will leave a message if it's important. I never answer for strange numbers due to this. I get quite a few over the last year despite having the same number for years. They never leave a message. Land lines are even worse. Back when i had a LL not only scams, telemarketers would call but assorted nutcases as well. Including a mumbler that would call every Friday evening.
I frequently get a call from Pennsylvania -- something about debt collection and that I need to speak to my attorney and I'm being served with charges. They use the name "Rachel Neese," not my real name. I'm on the National Do Not Call registry but get the call anyway.

I HATE those! I've had this phone for 25 years now and I get calls for 2 or 3 different names per year, so I know it's not someone who previously had my number. I wish the FCC would require debt collectors to document why they're calling a number, and get fined if they don't have legitimate cause, because I feel they just call thousands and thousands of numbers, bugging innocent people, hoping to get a hit.
The DNC registry now has a link especially for debt collectors. I've reported them and the calls stop within a few weeks.
I have received calls TWICE from supposedly my own phone number.
I used to answer all calls, and I got the "your computer is infected" call. I had a great fun time with that once. I played along, wasting his time. I kept asking him to repeat his instructions, etc. Meanwhile, I was actually cooking dinner, and I don't even have a windows computer anymore!
Now I only answer calls if I recognize the name or number, and even then I often let it go to VM. Usually, the only people who call are my inlaws and my dad. Otherwise, texting is what I do.
I never, ever, answer a number I don't know. They can leave a message if it's legit. That's the only way to get peace of mind IMO.
