Memphis isn't that much dangerous than other large cities. If your not involved in the usual criminal activities than your fine. Stay aware of your surroundings just like any where else. Robbers ( including Carjackers, ) and burglars is the main concern. If anyone pay attention to those homicides , about half or little over is due to domestic violence or personal acquaintances. If your not affiliated than gangs aren't a concern. Houston is gang capital of South.

The only city with a higher violent crime rate than Memphis is Detroit but 50% of the Memphis MSA is the City of Memphis itself, whereas only 15% of the Detroit MSA is the City of Detroit. If we go by metro area Memphis has the highest rate.

Let me clarify before anyone else adds to this side topic, Gang Capital equals # of gangs. Houston have 200+ gangs to Memphis 130+ ( I'm recalling off my mind). Little Rock is definitely lesser than both. Additionally Houston gang population is estimated around 20,000 while Memphis is around 7,000 according to old reports ( 2010-13).
I believe Memphis has the highest violent crime rate of any U.S. metro.
That could be possible but we're speaking strictly on the city not metro. It boils down to population with rates, therefore high crime cities/metros that smaller will be higher than those of higher populations. When it comes down to sheer volume then it's reverse. Most people goes by volume over rate in general. It's straight to the point per say.

As I've said previously, Memphis (or Pine Bluff) is murder capital.
A metro area is a city at it's contemporary size, it's called "metro area". It's the same thing.
The "city" often isn't the city, it's commonly smaller than it's urban area which is illogical. Someone somewhere along the line decided to keep the geographic name for old borders which a city has outgrew but call the new, larger area a "metro" instead.
