Despite the panic over the subway slashings, murders went down big time this January in New York. 21 compared with 35 from last year. Impressive too, since last January was record cold, so it shouldve kept people off the streets, but somehow despite the fact that business is blooming this year, we still have far less violence

All people have to take action to save these failed communities of color.
?? The movie Chi-Raq is Aristophanes' story Lysistra, which was a Greek comedy play from the classical era.

It's a modern setting with the original story. It doesn't literally have anything to do with Chicago.

Most people who could afford to move probably did. There's a reason the violent neighborhoods are also the least dense in the city, they're fairly empty of life.

Did you even see the movie? Yes, Spike Lee adapted "Lysistrata" for the framework, but the film itself is literally about the violence in Chicago, and its effects on the community. Don't let the rhyming dialogue and farcical nature of some scenes fool you. It has everything to do with what is happening out there.

Very interesting. Do you think cities like NYC and LA have reduced their crime rates by spreading everything out to the suburbs?

I think the fact people are panicking over several slashings over the course of a month is also a testament to the city's altered perspective of acceptable violence, a paradigm shift if you will. It's definitely not something to panic over, though it is something to be aware of.

Yeah, the fact that people are panicking over non-fatal slashings as opposed to daily shootings like in some other cities shows that the standards for safety have risen a lot in NYC. I bet Chicago would love to trade places with New York right now

Not sure about LA but only a small part of NYC has moved its poor to the suburbs. In fact Queens keeps on getting lots of impoverished immigrants from Asia and Latin America

LA's rising. 2 years ago it had 15 murders in January and this year it had 24. Last January it had 22.

Keep in mind warm cities have a longer huntin season than cold ones. If Detroit and Chicago had warm winters the stats would be worse than they already are.

Thing is, as soon as it get's warm in Chicago and Detroit, it might as well be a nightly news report on Vietnam, circa 1967. The killings really ramp up and on a weekend the dead and wounded rival that of platoons that got ambushed on the MeKong Delta.
