When the OP said we might be putting too much trust in prosecutors, well, anyone can make a mistake, and the system is set up so those mistakes can be cleared up. That's exactly why suspects and convicts get all those free attorney services. Some of them ARE innocent. What grinds me is when someone is proven to be totally innocent and they still aren't really cleared, like the Central Park Five or the West Memphis Three. The former, proven totally innocent of any wrongdoing by a confession and DNA testing of the real assailant, are still on the registry and can't even get ratcatching jobs. And the West Memphis Three are out of prison but not exonerated. They only took the Alford plea to get Damien Echols off Death Row before his execution date came up.

And it's not just the prosecutors who blew those cases -- it was the police, the judge, and the media had a role too of course. NOBODY even has to say they're sorry when they blow it.
That's a real pity! All the work to prosecute them you would think to undo this stuff would be an easy task, but still nothing done.

That's a bit how I felt when my daughter was falsely accused of molestation by a younger cousin.....let's just say that X was the set of circumstances this supposedly happened under, Y would be the reasons the accusation makes no sense, and neither my sister nor her husband apparently took any of that into account.

Well, I'm sure a lot of parents stop thinking and start freaking out when they hear their kid may have been sexually assaulted, or may have assaulted someone else. (Look at Mitchelle Blair!) But in all the time it takes to prosecute something like this, it seems like they should have cooled their jets and started thinking again.
