I was staggered to find there wasn't already a thread on master con man and womaniser John Meehan.
John Meehan, or 'Dirty John' as he came to be known, spent decades terrorizing a succession of women and manipulating them to obtain money, sex and power. He started out by winning these woman over, treating them like princesses and as he won their admiration and trust he isolated them from their loved ones and controlled them by whatever means it took.
This story is as unbelievable as it was tragic for all of Meehan's victims. Thankfully it had a happy ending of sorts.
I listened to this podcast and it infuriated me. I disagree with the happy ending as Terra has clearly struggled with PTSD and her life has been profoundly affected. Debra is lucky her daughters still have a relationship with her.
And do not even get me started on Debra's mother testifying on behalf of the man who murdered her daughter...

I said it had a "happy ending of sorts".
John Meehan attacked Terra on his own terms with the odds stacked overwhelmingly in his favour. The outcome was really the best one could possibly hope for.
Debra's mother's attitude towards her son-in-law, after he had murdered her daughter, was just plain weird.
I read this account when it was first printed in the L.A. Times, when the reader had to wait a day for the next installment. It was fascinating--and terrifying--to read. What a horrific ordeal that this woman went through. I'm so glad that he was caught!

Caught? I guess caught in the eye with a knife is a form of being caught.
Have listened to all 7 parts of the LA Times' podcasts on Dirty John. Provided a shortcut to them earlier in this thread. Full credit to the Times. Very well produced.
I know I’m late to the game here, but just finished the podcast and LOVED it. Am caught up with the Bravo TV shows too. I think this should be a thread in the Psychology section too because as I was listening to descriptions of this guy... particularly how viciously vindictive he became when crossed, I was like “Omg... I know that (type of) guy. I was married to that guy!” Anyway - GREAT podcast series, perfect case study in Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and (so far) great show.
