Having some personal experience with LE in the general area, but not those specific departments though, I definitely wouldn't rule out your premise either.
When I said they were clueless I wasn't meaning incompetent. We all know they did what they could with looking for that needle in a haystack with watching tons of videos to see if they'd see anything. I know of other departments that probably wouldn't have done half of what this one did. There is one in Michigan; Eric Franks (2011), that I advocate for the mother who's son is assumed murdered by the mother of his childs husband. LE haven't even looked at his digital history. Crime Watch Daily wanted to feature his case, LE said no because he was recently (back then) on the show Disappeared. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who murdered Eric; I'm not sure why they're dragging their feet all these years.

We'll see.

He isn't listed on the Barron County inmate log or booking log.

No, he isn't, you're right.

Apparently not all inmates are listed when booked.

Hm. Noodling around on Whitepages Premium, I was able to find what appears to be family of his that lives in the home where she was held.

Really?

Maybe, maybe not. Whitepages doesn't necessarily know who is living somewhere at the present moment. It is reportedly his family home, so that address would come up for family members.

It's the home about 2 doors down from the person who called 911.

Pretty sure that's where she was held. And it's owned by his family.

Sorry about TheCount website incorrectly identifying him as Closs' captor on their site.

His name is Jake Thomas Patterson.
• He is 21 years old.
• Patterson is unemployed.
• It appears he had no previous contact with Jayme Closs or her family.
•Patterson had planned his actions, and Jayme was his only target.
•He had "zero" criminal history with state and local authorities.
•He held Jayme in a home in a "remote" area.
•Patterson has a connection with Barron County, Wisconsin.

I had read he was unknown to the family; I hadn't seen before this that he had no previous contact with Jayme.

I wonder how he targeted her specifically if he'd had no previous contact with her?
