Default How bad is South Tucson

My friend and I are starting a business and we are trying to find a place where we could live in as well as have retail space, kinda like a loft. There aren’t a lot of these types of places in Tucson but we found one at 35th street at 6th avenue that would be perfect for us. However, I've heard bad things about South Tucson from a few people. While its a great deal for the place, obviously not getting robber multiple times a year is worth the extra cash. We also don't want people afraid to go to our place of biz, lol.

South Tucson is a great place for a business there is more development going on and more people moving to the area due to more affordable real estate there is also a lot more traffic on S. 6th ave due in part to the freeway expansion. It is conveniently located close to the 2 major freeways. The South Tucson community is very friendly and most business owners know each other by name and also the city officials the city which is 1 mile by 1 mile square has its own police department. There are always cops patrolling the streets keeping it safe as they promote more tourism for all of the great Mexican restaurants and shops in the area. In comparison the Southside of Tucson has the Tucson police that patrol and have much more crime due to a bigger area.

The link below is a little outdated (2000) but it will give you an idea of the demographics of South Tucson and of some other facts about the town.
Bigbiceps is right about South Tucson being good for businesses. My grandmother (in-law) lives in the area of 4th and 32nd, and I drive over there by myself all the time to take her places. The recent rennovation to 4th st, including better streets and sidewalks, park benches and some artwork along 29th street, have made that area even more beautiful. Businesses appear to be thriving as well. When you get here, you have to eat at Guillermos! (or as the locals call it "double L" ) Wonderful mexican food!!
Hope you don't change your mind. It is a nice place to visit... and to live!

p.s. When I said I drive to my grandmas , I should also mention that I am a female. I am not afraid to frequent the Double L, or McDonalds, or the Walgreens, or anything else up and down 6th or 4th aves. Just wanted to clarify that.

Yes, I agree with everything you mentioned. It's very artsy indeed and the street renovation looks great! The place is thriving all of the business are very busy and not just purely from locals but foreigners and out of state people. I've also noticed there are alot of middle to upper-middle class Mexicans from Sonora visiting the area. I guess due in part to Bus tours and shuttle buses that are also located in South Tucson that come to and from Sonora and Sinaloa. You can even take the buses from South Tucson all the way to the Beach Resorts of Mazatlan and many other great cities to visit. There are specials on all the time and buses departing several times a day. South Tucson is a gifted community.

I wouldn't live there if you paid me to. You better visit first before committing to anything. Does the term GHETTO mean anything to you??

I see you are still living in the 70's. Ask any business owner in the area how successfull their businesses are and how well they are financially. Does the term MONEY mean anything to you?

I see what you people up earlier in the thread are saying about the business aspect, and that may be true. But residential is a different story. South Tucson is the last part of Tucson I would live in, and I've lived in Tucson most of my life. The neighborhoods are scary; my friend used to live over there, and it was almost a nightly occurance to have break ins. No thanks.

That's quite odd with a city of 1 mile to 1mile square and its own police department that has four cop cars patrolling the area at all times. I guess thieves like the idea of being caught and prosecuted.
