Default Rental homes near University for a short stay? Things to see in Tucson?

Hello,

I'll be visiting the University in Tucson for a few days in February and I'm looking for a rental house that won't be too far. I'll be with my wife and we'll be in Tucson for 8-9 days. I don't know if this time is the peak season (it will be my first time ever in Arizona) but the max I can afford is $140/night. Is it possible to find something nice for that price? Reading the forum, I learnt about Extenday Stay Hotel, which could be a possibility.

I noticed that flying from Burlington to Tucson seems a bit of a pain as no flights with only one stop is available from everything I checked from kayak.com. So, the plan is to land in Phoenix, rent a car, then to drive to Tucson. As I want to visit the area a bit too, the renting car will be a must. As a first-time Tucson visitor, what are the places I should visit? Nice shopping?

I'm looking forward to your suggestions.

Thanks.

I doubt you'll be able to find any furnished houses for such a short stay, but there are other options, such as Extended Stay. There's also a place called the Riveside Suites which is near the University at Campbell and River (actually Limberlost) which used to be condos, but now are fully furnished studio, one and two bedroom units. www.riversidesuites.com I think that's the web site. We stayed there when we were condo shopping for our winter home here three years ago. They have laundry, a pool, tennis court and a little mini putting green. I don't know their rates, though.

There are only a few direct flights to Tucson, as it's not a hub, nor is it a major airport. Phoenix is the major airport, so I'm not surprised that you're directed to them rather than to Tucson.

Things to see: The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Sabino Canyon, Pima Air Space Museum, Reid Park Zoo, Kartchner Cavernss, Colossal Cave, Tombstone, lots of places to see. You might check other threads on the Tucson forum for opinions on what to see and do.

Thanks a lot for the tip about Riverside Suites!! Their website is actually: riversidesuitestucson.com This sounds very interesting, as the price for a studio (with a King Size bed) for my dates is $139/night (or $799 weekly). This looks to be a fine place, I'll give them a call for sure when I have my exact dates. So, as you stayed here previously, you liked your stay? Everything was nice and clean? It was quiet enough?

Thanks for the infos about the places to visit too. It's really appreciated.

It's very quiet. There are meandering walkways around the complex and each unit has a front porch and a patio. There are lots of snowbirds, conventioneers, etc., but it's quiet and nice. Great workout room, conference center, lots of food, books and magazines in the lobby. People are nice. Rooms are nice--darkish, but nice. Everything is furnished, all you need are your clothes. It's completely gated so it's safe, next to Trader Joe's, across from St. Phillip's Plaza, next to the Rillito River and bike/hike paths. 10 minutes from U of A. They have housecleaning every two weeks, but your place will be immaculate when you arrive. The owners are Ray and Renee Eastman, and last I knew Mauri was the girl in charge of reservations. They have pics on the website, so you'll have a good idea what it's like. We lived there for three months while house hunting and going to Rockie's Spring Training, and really loved it.

It sounds like a VRBO could be perfect for you and there's loads of them around. Your problem is going to be that you want to come in February and you're going to find many of them have already got that month booked. There's always cancellations and you could get lucky too.

They've got a confusing way of navigating Tucson. If you're looking to be nearish the University area, I suggest clicking on La Madera, Sam Hughes, Armory Park, Downtown, and Other Tucson Properties to start with.

Here's a link to VRBO tucson. Good luck!

I hate to say this, but I am very glad that you are going to try and experience the above when you visit Tucson...however...save a few of them...lol!

I have been to most of the above mentioned places and I really enjoyed them, but if I end up moving to Tucson, it might be difficult to enjoy the places again. I loved the Sonora Desert Museum, but would it worth it to go again? Perhaps...if some family was visiting town, I guess I would take them there.
But perhaps you want to save some of the adventures for when you move down here.
Just thought I would give a perspective...not trying to discourage anything!

That's really too bad, the owners just e-mailed me and there is no availability for my dates at Riverside Suites...I'll have to keep on looking places like VRBO and the likes.

I might have a lead for you - a short-term townhouse for rent on the west side of town - just 10 minutes to the UA. What are your exact dates? The gem show begins in late January and ends Feb. 13, so that will affect availability for hotel rooms and rental homes.

The dates would be either Feb. 4- to Feb. 13 or Feb. 24 to Mar. 5.
I definitely noticed that it's hard to find something in the beginning of February...

Go for February 24th to March 5th. The gem show is nice and fun, but it's not fun to pay up the a** for a rental house, so it's best to avoid it completely.
Riverside Suites is nice. It's at the junction of the Mountain Avenue and Rillito bike paths, as well as behind a Trader Joe's. There's also the university farm there across Limberlost, and that adds a lot of charm to the area. I live very near there and it's a really quiet and pretty part of town with great, sweeping views of the Catalinas.
