If anyone can give me an idea on how the rush hour commute looks like from these 4 towns to the Tucson Convention Center area, that'd be great. 20 min? 30? more than an hour?

Thanks!

Rough average, durring rush hour I would say 45 minutes + from Oro Valley and Tanque Verde areas, 30 minutes + from The Foothills and Vail area. Could be a bit longer from Vail, I'm sure someone that lives out there will chime in. But where you live within any of these areas will have an impact too. In Oro Valley for example you could have as much as 20 minutes difference depending on what part of Oro Valley you are in. The others areas will be the same too.

Thanks! We're trying to narrow down our search for areas we should live once we move to Tucson this winter. We're moving across country from the NE. Perhaps we should rent first before we buy, but we hate to think that we'll have move twice (albeit the cross country one will be the most taxing) within a year or two. Do you think rent-to-own is a good option? Are there enough good homes that are offered as rent to buy?

From Northern Oro Valley (Tangerine) you're probably looking at about 45 minutes...give or take how many dang stoplights you get and old people you get behind driving 10 MPH on Oracle.

DO NOT BUY HERE WITHOUT LIVING HERE FIRST. No. Seriously, don't! This is our third state...and I can promise you....buying without knowing the area is not a good thing.

Tucson is very different from other areas (the lack of highways come to mind) in the country. I'd be very wary to buy a house here right now anyway. My neighborhood? Up in the OV area? Full of foreclosures. You turn a corner and there's 4 houses up for sale on it. Couple months later, moving truck shows up and then the foreclosed sign comes out. Eventually...the auction sign comes up.

Don't rush into something like this just because you don't want to hassle yourself with moving twice. There's just things you can't know about an area without living there every day.
