Bummer: We are looking for a place with 2 bedrooms / 1 bath. Willing to pay up to $800 ~ $900 / month. Square footage isn't a big priority - we have lived in an unbelievably small place for the past 3 years (~400sq ft). Our wants are basically 3: quiet (serenity now!), safe, and at least covered parking. The University will be our work base.
sierraAZ: We don't want to end up in the midst of a party zone of rowdy students (well, that's what my wife says anyway ). We won't be in Tucson for long - just 6 months - but we want to live in a place that offers peace-n-quiet as well as safety for the duration of our stay. I will check out Craig's List - and thanks for the utilities tip!

Hi E1even,
PM me if you'd like my landlord's number or email address. They have 2 ranches on the west side (1/2 mile outside of city limits) not a bad commute to downtown, in my East Coast opinion. But they have several houses/apartments in your price range on each property. We're paying about $800/mo. for a 2 bedroom duplex. It's a nice, quiet and safe area. The only thing lacking is covered parking. Let me know if you want more info... she can let you know what exactly is available and when.

Thanks all - mdtoaz, there's a PM waiting for you.
I thought of another general question: We are moving to Tucson just after Christmas. Do you all think that we'll hit a 'housing shortage' due to a mass of students moving in at that time? Is it reasonable to assume we can find good housing within a week or two of arriving? We're new to this exercise of finding housing...
Thanks!

I don't want to "rain on your parade" in any way, e1even, however, NOT A GOOD TIME.
Most college students will probably be settled by December but, due to our fantastic Winter weather and the crappy weather up North, "extended stay" tourists (aka: Snowbirds) will be arriving EN MASSE!
The population of Tucson increases significantly during the Winter.

I believe this year it will be perfectly OK... There's nothing but distressed homeowners not being able to sell and needing to move, investors, and speculators trying to rent everything and anything. All these not selling converted condos will be eventually for rent. Nothing to worry about IMO. It gets a little crazy in the hotels during the gem show, but that's in February. What could be a problem for them is the short stay, but at least the apartments have no problem with 6-month leases. Most rent on month-to-month basis, too. Just the rent is higher. The places with general month-to-month policy are not desirable. I never did understand if they're Americans... Most decent places run credit check and probably want hefty deposits in case of lacking US credit history.

Great point, Sierra . . .
I was thinking (that's dangerous enough ! ! ) more about past history rather than the present and possibly future financial conditions.
Sorry!
