I was fortunate enough to live in Tucson for a year. I loved it!! There is so much to do, and so many places to go within a day's drive!

I lived on N Sabino Canyon Rd near the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area (AMAZING- you MUST go there for hiking to Seven Falls and swimming in the creek!). I was amazed at the price of rent in a brand-new apartment in such a beautiful area. The cost of living is stellar!
If you love camping and being active, Tucson is for you!
Mt Lemmon, Kitt Peak Observatory, Tubac, Patagonia (wineries!), the old mission in South Tucson, the Desert Museum, the caves, the Biosphere 2.. I could go on and on! As a photographer/traveler, Tucson was paradise! And being driving distance from San Diego, Grand Canyon, Sedona, Canyon de Chelly, native ruins, alpine Arizona, Rocky Point, Vegas, etc, only made it better.

Enjoy!

Thankyou! I am looking forward to our second visit to Tucson next week.
Hoping my family likes the area too, as much as I liked it in my first visit!! :-)

keep us posted about your visit. I went there for an interview two weeks ago. I was able to tour the town with a realtor. I had to say that the city looks so different from where I have been living. I have never been to that part of the country before. It will take time to adjust to the climate and environment there. Foothills neighborhood looks pretty nice to me.

I made about 5 visits over the course of my recruitment and on at least 3 of them I spent a day with a realtor. Sam Hughes and the Foothills are like night and day on almost all levels. The "commute" from Sam Hills is minimal and most of the houses are older while there is more of a range for Foothills homes and the commute is 20-30 mins (at least on my dry runs).

We currently live in a 100 yr old house in the Northeast and my husband is convinced that every time it creaks it is about to fall down (he grew up in a Manhattan apartment), so he almost immediately nixed Sam Hughes.

Be ready to do lots of looking.

20 minutes driving is nothing, get XM radio and enjoy the alone time.

I visited both areas with a realtor on my job interview. Sam Hughes area is closer to UA and to Basis School and University High (I think). But the houses are smaller and older. Foothills has bigger houses, good schools too. But if I were to decide where to live, I probably will go for Foothills.

Thanks. I agree about Basis and University High being the better schools in the area. They are closer to the U of A which is why I was thinking about living in the Sam Hughes neighborhood. But this is site unseen of course. I plan on visiting Tucson in Jan.

I bet the mountain views in the Foothills will win me over from the sounds of it.

Good questions about students getting into Basis. I will be looking for an answer on your thread. I think it is a lottery system. I have no idea how many kids get in vs. apply each year.
