I am considering a move to tucson in the near future. I would like some feedback as to whether it would be a wise move because I don't drive. Is the town easy to get around by foot or bike? What is the public transportation system like? Are there any areas of town where I could find a place to rent for maybe 400 to 500 per month?

I have another question. Can anyone share an experience about finding a job in town?

The bus service in Tucson is alright. You can get around town on the bus no problem as long as your plan your stops/changes in advance. For a city it's size, Tucson is reasonably bike friendly, although as in any large city some of the major thoroughfares might be a little difficult to navigate riding a bike.

Is it moped friendly as well? Or do they think everyone on a moped has a DUI record and throw stuff at you as they pass. (Yes, that happened to me more than once in North Carolina.)

This is no lie, I swear half the people in Tucson bike instead of drive!

Okay, maybe not half but biking is very popular there and can be a good source for transportation...as well as exercise.

You can get around pretty well in central Tucson by bike. Tucson is in a relatively flat valley surrounded by mountains, so hills are only an issue on the outskirts of town. The only issues for biking in Tucson are:

1. Traffic: Unlike most cities its size, Tucson is underserved by freeways, so most traffic is on city streets. The busiest are 6-lane arterials with traffic moving at 40-45 mph. You probably don't want to do a lot of biking on these streets. But there are other more minor thoroughfares that are good for biking.

2. Heat: From May to September, daytime highs are usually 100+ with intense sun. This doesn't mean that it's impossible to bike (particularly if you're doing it in the morning or evening) but it may not be the most pleasant experience. It may not even be feasible if you are biking a fair distance to work and don't have a place to shower when you get there.

In terms of apartments for rent in the price range you mentioned, you will find plenty of 1-bedrooms for rent in that range all over town. My brother just rented a 1-bedroom near Kolb and Speedway for $525. The complex is very nice, so I know that a similar sized place in a less luxe complex would be under $500.

As others said, the bus system in Tucson is okay. It's best if you're able to live along a main line with more frequent service and hopefully not have to make any transfers.

I would say YES, Dr Drew.

If you live and work within the city limits, Sun Tran Bus Service is fairly decent. Also, other than during the Monsoon Season, between the 4th of July and Labor Day, you should not have any problems biking around town.

Although I have a vehicle I do recreational bike riding year round.

Good Luck
