I see that the sunset in Tucson right now is 7:30, but it is usually fairly light out after the official sunset. Can anyone tell me what time it actually gets dark? How much does this vary throughout the year?

Thanks.

You ask what time it gets dark, but do you know it gets LIGHT at 4:30 a.m. this time of year? Sometimes I feel like Al Pacino in that movie where he was a New York City cop solving a crime in Alaska when the sun never set.

As a teenager working on a roof it meant getting up early. The 162nd FW at Tucson Intl works an early shift as well to take advantage of the daylight.

Nominally, you can add one hour to sunset to get the end of evening nautical twilight. Today, from the nautical and civil twilight calculator, you find on 1 July 2012 the sun sets at 7:34 PM but nautical twilight, when it really gets dark, is 8:37 PM, and astronomical twilight, when it's good for stargazing and astronomy, it's later still, 9:14 PM.

Sluggo, that is neat information. I didn't know about nautical and civil twilight. Thank you for this. :-)

You are quite welcome. It was taught at the Night Vision Goggles instructor course at Luke AFB a few years back. It has significant utility when using NVGs.
