Are there any other decent furniture stores in Tucson? Most of what I've found so far are either super small or super expensive "fine furnishings".
Eh... not really. American was my first choice for years and I really miss having them in Tucson.
Depending on what you are looking for I would start at Levitz. The one on the NW side - Orange Grove and Thornydale I believe, is the nicest. There was less pressure than the main warehouse and it certainly seemed like the selection was just as good. I am not crazy about the couches we got there (they always seem a little small), but they are OK. The bedroom set is nice though. Both are Ashley.
JC Penny will never get another dime from me for their furniture. They stood behind their warranty, but the fact that I had to use it three times in 2 years on two different sets of furniture says something about their quality.
There is an Ashley furniture place in Green Valley I didn't get around to checking out, but it looks OK so long as you are fine with Ashley furniture. There are also a couple of La-Z-Boy stores (more than couches and recliners) as well as a Basset that are more expensive, but given the cheap junk most places sell they may be worth it.
There are a lot of smaller stores on Ft. Lowell that I haven't looked at in years, but they may be worth your time as well.
Thanks, Prodigal Native. I'm ok with Ashley if it's decent quality. I went to the Sam Levitz outlet store and some of their Ashley couches were in pretty bad shape. Springs sticking out, and got cut on my hand by a piece of metal sticking out of one couch.
The Levitz I went to was the one at Orange Grove and Thornydale. The salesman at the outlet store said that location has the biggest selection. Their Ashley couches seemed to be much better than the Ashley couches at their outlet store.
I haven't been able to find the bedroom set I want. I want a white "cottage" type of bedroom, but they told me at Levitz that I probably won't be able to find much in white in Arizona and would have to go to a coastal state for it. Found some online but outrageous prices, so I may be stuck with a darker set again.

Furniture seems to be like clothes; there is the current style and whatever the style is at the time is all you will find. In 8 years, when white cottage style furniture is finally back in style and that is all that is available you will want something different.
go to the old Galleria fairly often to catch a cheap movie. I have been thinking the last few months that it would be a great place to set up an indoor swap meet. It has all the facilities it needs, it would be nice to have that kind of place further north in Tucson. And it would be so nice to have something like a swap meet INDOORS! Who wants to wander around outside in July?
I just wish I knew how to contact the owners and see if they would be interested!

I checked this out for you as best I could. I read in New Mexico Business Week, "[Mr. Lee] Blaugrund is the former CEO of American Home Furnishings, a retail business he sold in 2005 to Los Angeles investors. Through his Tanager Properties, he owns and manages 1.5 million square feet of industrial space." So I think it's a safe bet that he still owns the property on Oracle Road in Tucson. But then the article went on to say that Mr. Blaugrund today mostly concentrates on vineyards he owns in Argentina (?!) and charities he runs in that country. Well ... he always was fluent in Spanish.
The property on Oracle WOULD be a fantastic space for an indoor flea market. Other than the movie theater, it's now mostly used (illegally) by kids riding their skate boards down the parking ramp.
The City of Albuquerque website says Tanager has an active business license through 2013, and lists their contact info as: 1503 CENTRAL AV NW, ALBUQUERQUE, NM 87104, (505) 247-2056. It's not listed in the Albuquerque phone directory, though. But a Tanager Property Management company IS listed in the Greeley, Colorado, phone book. Go figure.
I love mysteries like this. If you find anything out, let us know.

Yes, even after all this time, the departure of American Home still seems to leave Tucson homeowners in a lurch. I would agree that Levitz's inventory doesn't equal what AH had when Mr. Blaugrund was still running it. If it makes you feel any better, we didn't have any cottage-style white bedrooms at AH while I was working there, except in the Youth Furniture Dept., where we had one with twin beds. Other than the bed situation, the rest was perfectly adult looking. I was able to order one for a customer once that was part of the Kathy Ireland's inventory (manufactured by Martin), but I just looked online and the only thing white she has these days is home office furniture, which she sells a ton of. Go figure.
Universal Furniture's Paula Deen Home collection (yes, that Paula Deen) features a very pretty white cottage bedroom I think would hit the spot with you called the Steel Magnolia collection. I would give you a link, but to see the whole collection you have to look at the Paula Deen catalog, which is a 27-page .pdf file that I was too impatient to download. Just Google "Universal Furniture Paula Deen Home" and you'll see it. I did the "where is this sold" search and the answer I got was Thomasville on Ina Road. I guess that puts it out of the "bargain" category, but maybe you could get it when they're having a sale. Universal in general isn't as expensive as the Thomasville brand, so it's worth asking. We carried a lot of Universal at AH. Pottery Barn also has white, but it would be in the same price range.
All of those are in the $1,500 range for the whole suite. One thing about ordering through a company with stores in the area, if something comes damaged you can often return it to the local store instead of sending it back via a shipper. If you ever buy furniture via the internet, make sure you check on the return policy. It's sometimes complicated.
Good luck finding something. Levitz didn't tell you wrong, the cottage style is most popular in the southeast.
Tried to rep you, but it says I have to spread it around first. lol
You're welcome. You know, I saw a Sam Levitz commercial on TV tonight (on Channel 4's post-Olympics news program) and what was in it? A white bedroom! The screen was divided into fours and in each quadrant was a photo of a room. One was a bedroom that was whiter than white! I actually yelled when I saw it. Good thing I was alone in the room. If they don't have it in stock, you should complain.

Cool! Maybe they can order it for me if they don't have it in stock. Or I'll get the one at Sam's Club. I really like that set.
Great post, jukesgrrl. I shopped there some years ago and loved it.
I've also shopped from time to time at Table Talk. Their stores are small and eclectic, but I love their solid wood furniture. They have great kitchen accessories, too. I appreciate the fact that they are locally owned and managed.
