Default Sand Rail/Baja Buggy/Off Roading

In anticipation of my move to Tucson, I started thinking about what kinds of outdoor activities there would be for me to engage in. I thought maybe there would be some good off-roading since it is a desert afterall.

I've never really gotten into it due to not having any extra money to spend on this, but I've always wanted to. I was considering purchasing a fixer-upper baja beetle or sand rail or maybe an old suzuki samurai.

Does anyone know if there are any good areas to drive around in where it is legal to do so near Tucson? Are there sand dunes near by?

Yes, there are a lot of off-road trails around Tucson. For example, the Catalina Mountains, the Redington Pass area, and the Ironwood National Monument to name a few. Dunes, not so much. You gotta go west towards Yuma for that.

lots of public land out here, so nearly endless possibilities....just be sure to stay on established tracks, observe the signs, and be safe and legal....as suggested, Redington Pass has lots of roads out there, Chareleau (sp) Gap is popular for really capable vehicles, lots more...there are a few books for jeeping routes, too....
