Phoenix, in my opinion, "bests" Tucson. Also, have you been to Atlanta, GA? How about Los Angeles or even many parts of Florida--like Orlando or Tampa & St Petersburg? I think Tucson is a very original and interesting city. I lived there from 1991 until 1998--also attending the University of Arizona. I love the food, the foothills, the nature, the sunsets, the night sky, the desert wildlife, and the weather was beautiful.
I've also been to Portland and it is a much-better planned city than Tucson, that's for sure. But the weather in Portland (for me) would make me kill myself!! LOL...too much rain and clouds. Check out Las Vegas too, for sprawl. Talk about irresponsible--where are they gonna get their water??? Awful lack of planning.

Well said. I've found this forum to be very helpful in a lot of ways, but very frustrating in others. It amazes me how negative so many people are - and not just on the Tucson board. I guess the anonymity of the internet allows people to bash and complain easily. But it seems like it is fairly non-productive.
If you don't like where you are, go somewhere else. If you're unable to go somewhere else, try to change what you don't like. There are numerous ways to go about fostering change, and if enough people worked together that change might occur. Sounds a little utopian, maybe, but it might be more productive than constant complaining.
I await your bashing.

OK: as many of you know; I do not care for Tucson-------but, that city's appearance (or the lack thereof) is very low on my list of dislikes against it.
In other words: if housing were inexpensive, the illegal immigrants deported and higher wages were offered, Tuscon would rank higher than about 95% of the USA's cities IMHO.

At first I was offended by your post, but after a bit of thought I'm inclined to agree with you. The actual area is beautiful, but the city itself is an ugly place. Tucson is basically a giant suburb for the sake of being a giant suburb. When I'm driving around I often find myself looking at the trees, then looking at the mountains, then looking at the crappy stores or single story town homes that separate the strip malls from one another and feeling melancholy.

That's true. Nature is beautiful and unique. It may not be to everybody's taste, but it does have its own beauty. It's the rest (you mentioned) that sucks.

Oh, so your problem is with logistics, ArizonaBear. Say you had a beautiful home in the foothills and a high salary, you'd live here? Because let's be honest - Tucson is such a segregated city that if these two needs are met, the third doesn't really matter.
My problems with Tucson run way deeper... OK, let me ask you. If you win the Powerball tomorrow (decent jackpot ), where would you live? Let's say you might not know this yet... Would you leave Phoenix in a NY second? AZ? US?

Truth?
If money were no object; central Phoenix as in Central/Bethany Home would be on my short list with Kingman of all places as a wild card
As I have stated in the past: any '4 season' state is out of the running as well as humid locations which eliminates everything else E of the Rockies.
California: too many people-------beaucoup bux or not. So that leaves Arizona
