Point is, Tucson may not be eye candy as far as a "city" goes, but in order to live life to it's fullest WHEREVER you are you need to seek out those things that make that place unique and beautiful. There are many things that make Tucson beautiful:
The mountains, the bio and ecological diversity of the desert, those beautiful monsoon storms rumbling in from the mountains, the stately saguaro cactus, the native american and spanish influences in architecture, art and food......you just need to LOOK...many of us SEE those beautiful things, so it's not that they are not there, your frame of mind is not allowing you to see them. Does Tucson have problems? You bet, many and it's not just urban sprawl! We are saddled with a City council that doesn't act for the good of the "many" instead of the "few", the County is not far behind and there isn't enough space here to talk about the State government. But if we were to work together to better that (instead of typing here bashing everything), Tucson could be seen as "beautiful" to many people.
It's the glass half full or half empty. I bet that most of the people that complain the loudest wouldn't be happy anywhere they went....JMHO

I like the looks of Tucson. But then I like the native vegetation.
The saguaros, prickly pears, barrell, etc cacti are all similar, but
each one has a different look - like people.
The landcape is also beautiful and it is part and parcel of the city.
It's just like San Francisco, Rio de Janeiro, Colorado Springs, Chicago,
etc. Part of what makes Tucson attractive is the distant mountains
and the near.
You don't like the dumpy old houses? I do. Old neighborhoods from
the 20's to the 40's have personality and are interesting. I might not
want to live there, but that kind of thing is cool to look at. More modern
tract homes might be boring, but usually they are not unattractive. Most
people in the world would kill to live in such a place. The older the tract
home, the more chance the residents have had to personalize it and the
more interesting they are. (HOA's will put a stop to that in the future.)
I've lived in places where I've hated the weather, but I've always found
beauty and managed to enjoy my life there. Even in Taiwan and Japan
where there are soaring uninspired concrete high-rises all over, people
take the time to make some little 'place' attractive.
People that whine and complain about how a place looks tend to whine
and complain about pretty much everything. If you can't find beauty
in Tucson then you aren't looking very hard.

Everybody has a different opinion of how beautiful or how ugly a city is. For me, Tucson is a very beautiful city and it blends well with the surrounding desert and mountains. It still has that old west look and feel in many areas. Another good thing I like about Tucson is, you can be in downtown, then drive for 20 minutes, and you'll be out in the middle of nowhere in the scenic desert, which is something that cannot be said for many cities.

I tend to think of some people who complain about things, like a city, will never be able to find a city they'll like, no matter where they go.
Each city has a beauty of its own.
