Sorry, Marcy . . . I wasn't implying it was an unsafe neighborhood by any means but more that Crimes Against Vehicles is a way of life in any city nowadays, not just Tucson.
Obviously, Midwest is doing research in order to locate a safe and comfortable place to live so why not keep in mind the security features of an enclosed garage instead of taking a risk? A garage also affords a safe place to store a bicycle just in case that becomes an issue.
I am a Michigander planning to visit 8/22 thorugh 8/30. I will be out there for an interview with ADOC and am trying to decide on which area to go. Does anyone know anything about Glendale? for instance, is it as small as Winslow? Is it near U of A or ASU?

Bummer - Your point is well made. One of the things I've picked up on early on is the lack of storage in Tucson compared to Michigan. I'm use to basements . Thank you for your thoughts on this. Wish me luck
We lived in an executive condo complex called Riverside Suites for six months in 2007-2008 while we were condo shopping and Spring Training visiting. It is at the corner of Limberlost and Campbell next to Trader Joe's. It has an open parking lot, and there was never an issue with any car parked outside in the open while we were there.
Where we bought is in Oro Valley. We have detached garages, but most people use their carport space, instead, as the garages are used for storage, work shops, motorcycles or boats, but rarely for everyday car use. There's never been a problem with the cars parked in the covered carports, or in the open guest spots.
Maybe we've just been very lucky to not have had problems with open parking, but a garage wouldn't necessarily be on the top of my list unless I needed the storage space.
Marcy1210 - Thank you for your input. It's appreciated. I've added Riverside to my list. As I replied to Bummer, I'm use to storage in Michigan because of basements. I'll have to keep in mind while in Tucson that the 'basement feature' will not be an option for storage.

First, what is ADOC?
Second, your questions are very unusual. You are on the Tucson thread, which is where the University of Arizona (known as the U of A) is. Arizona State University is about 2 hours drive north of here in Tempe, Arizona. ASU has a western branch campus that is located in Glendale, even further away fom Tucson. ASU West | Arizona State University Glendale also has a community college.
Glendale is incorporated as a city, but it appears as a very large suburb of Phoenix, crisscrossed by several major freeways. It has a population of nearly a quarter of a million people. No, it doesn't resemble Winslow in any way I can think of. Winslow is a town of about 9,600 people. Weather in the two locations is different.
Glendale, filled with housing developments and malls, just melds into the giant Phoenix metropolis that fills Maricopa County. It is where the Arizona Cardinals football stadium is located, as well as Jobing.com Arena, where the Phoenix Coyotes play hockey and many large concerts and other entertainments take place.
None of that has anything to do with Tucson, which is in Pima County, closer to the border with Mexico. I'm now guessing that ADOC might mean the Dept. of Corrections? There is a state prison in Winslow, but I don't know of one in Glendale. I believe they just have a city jail. The state prison serving Tucson would be the one in Florence, AZ, I believe. That's in Pinal County, which is between Tucson and Phoenix.

Correct, ADOC , Arizona Department of Corrections. While Florence is a massive complex everyone hears about there are other prisons throughout the state. There is a facility here in town on South Wilmot, Winslow etc. That west Phoenix/Glendale area has several they might be referring to, Lewis or Perryville prisons. Though their question was not very well phrased I think they are trying to figure out the possibility of living in all the different areas where they might be located within ADOT. A wide range of lifestyles! It could include anything from Douglas, to Yuma to Kingman to Winslow and a multitude of places in between! For all the inquiring minds here is a map of the ADOC prisons in AZ. Arizona Department of Corrections Kind of scary when you see them all!
Hello to all who contributed to this thread. I was successful in finding a rental condo in the Foothills. Thank you to all who took the time to submit suggestions and knowledge about the Tucson area. Much appreciated.

CONGRATS and WELCOME, Midwest . . . have you arrived yet?
The weather is definitely improving and, hopefully, should be back to normal in a week or so.

Thank you for your welcome Bummer....arriving early October. Yes, I do see on the weather news that the monsoons are in bloom now LOL....but I hear October and the months to come are beautiful. Can't wait to experience a new place.

I'm planning to move to Tucson next year and all I'm looking for is townhouses. I have a realtor who sends me all the updated listing of townhouses for sale in Tucson, and where oh where oh where are the garages? Carports are not garages! All I see is carports w/townhouses! What gives anyway!!!
I'll be moving from Las Vegas where every townhouse complex I've ever looked at here has a nice big 2 car garage attached. My older townhouse here could park 3 small cars. That is what I'll miss in buying a townhouse in Tucson, a garage, and I'll have to make do with a carport where my car is unprotected!
What I am discovering is there's skads of townhouse complexes in the Tucson area, everytime I get a new update, there I see townhouse complexes I didn't even know existed from my initial searches! So there should be no problem finding a townhouse rental down there, unless you run into one that says No Rentals!
Yes, I'm sure if I looked at the townhouses priced over $100k you might find a garage attached, but I'm looking in the $50k range.
