Default Which Law Enforcement Dept is better, moving to Tucson

I'm currently living overseas and the wife and I have been talking about moving to Tucson for more than a year now. I see that the Pima County Sheriff's dept is going to start their hiring process in January. Since I don't live over there, I wanted to know, out of all the police dept's out there, which one is the most professional and respected by the Tucson community?

We are looking at making the move in January so that I can begin the interview process. In the meantime we need to get some jobs. What are some jobs that one can get quickly over there? We have both been living overseas for more than 12 years now and when we visited Tucson a few months ago it was a little bit of a cultural shock, but we can wait to get over there! I have a Law Enforcement background with my current job so I was thinking getting some form of security job? If I were to go for my choice of the Sheriff's dept, police academy starts until Sept 2013...

Her family lives in Tucson and offered to help out with a car our first few months until we get settled. What are some cheap but nice apartments for a married couple to rent that have no credit checks and might be furnished?

Thanks to everyone in advance for any advice!!!

You might be able to get an apartment without a credit check, but not a law enforcement job. I had to submit to a credit check to be a Substitute Teacher. People with bad credit would be more approachable by corruption. I recommend the Border Patrol.....TPD is a lot of angry roid heads.

I know thats the theory but personally I think thats nonsense encouraged by the credit reporting industry to sell more reports. A person could have struggled financially and still be completely trustworthy. Conversely, someone could pay all their bills on time and be a thief. Credit checks should be used for issuing credit and very little else.

John,

You ABSOLUTELY will be subject to a credit report when applying for any LE agency. SO, start now making it better and then in about a year when you get to that point in the process it hopefully will have improved enough. They arent looking for perfect credit neccessarilly, but it is a part of the overall evaluation process for the exact reason Khunt said.

Now, as for the application process....the best approach when applying to LE jobs is to apply for as many as you can...there are a million reasons one agency may move you through the process vs someone else, so get on as many hiring lists as possible.

Then, later after you get thru the academy and have a year or so under your belt at whatever agency gives you the first chance, you can lateral to a different department if you dont like it.

Very true, as a matter of fact many companies do a credit check as a routine part of the hiring process. I know of some major retailers that do it even for part time minumun wage employees, part of the new hire employee packet. Also, watch what you post on your Facebook page. That is a new trend in hiring and interviewing in professional jobs. During the interview process some companies are checking out your Facebook page, Durring the interview, they will flip their laptop around and ask you to sign into your FB page. They can't make you do it but,,,,,,,,,,,, If you don't they will be wondering what you are hiding.

Same goes for DoD clearances. Those, who would cheat on their wives are considered a risk.

I know some companies do credit checks as part of pre employment. Im actually undecided on whether thats a good idea for an LEO position (which I'm not looking for). I work in fairly high level IT positions and I've only been subjected to a credit check once - for a security clearance (which was granted). I dont have a Facebook page but if a potential employer asked for access to one I'd probably look elsewhere as that would be a big red flag about what kind of company that is. Facebook considers that to be a violation of their TOS.

Hi, L/E agency, i agree with the post to apply to as many as possible. If i remember correctly, A.z. dept. of Corrections was'nt very difficult to get onboard with, food for thought there. To work security you will need a A.Z. guard Card, not difficult to obtain, you already have L/e background, pay fees, do paperwork, you'll obtain. Housing, furnished, no credit check, Budget Suites of Amercia...............Chain Motel w small, basic Studios for rent on a weekly, monthly basis, long/short term, Cable T.v. eletric, all Inclusive. Rates around $ 750 a Month, except for January/Febuary, Gem show in Town, prices triple everywhere.Think located on Grant Rd/I-10 ( ?? )............another by Tucson Medicial center, likely cost more. Stay away from older weekly motels around town, Drachman, Oracle Corridor, Bensen Hgwy-crack houses..............Also, check " Craigs List " excellent resource for housing, employment, more...............Good Luck...............

I would like to thank everyone on the advise and insight about fredit checks, facebook in the job interviews, etc.
I work at the American Embassy here and they did a pretty extensive background check before I got the job so I don't think I'll have any issues with that... I do owe $12,000 in student loans that I'm slowly paying back, I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing.

When does the gem show end? We still haven't set a date yet for the move we just know that we want to be out of here by February...

Is Border Patrol really that easy to get in? How dangerous is the job with all the violence coming from the mexican drug cartels?

Again, thank you!

I can't tell you whether the BP is "easey to get in" but I suspect the process is pretty complex. You'll also need to be able to be taught a 2nd language (unless you are already bi-lingual). As far as danger, well, it's a law enforcement position. You and your partners have to do whatever they have to do. There may be "safer" law enforcement jobs out there, but I suspect you'd find them boring.
