How is it around there? Are there many students in that area?

Not really many students there. It's kinda of borderline rough in that area, and I say that from living there.

There are several square blocks around Alvernon and Grant that are pretty seedy. The area has very high number of rental properties. My brother got mugged walking back from the Wal-Mart market to his apartment on Alvernon between Grant and Glenn. Maybe that was just an isolated incident. The stretch of Alvernon north of Glenn seems better.

There's a reason there's good prices there. Remember that.

How does it compare with the rougher areas of Stone/Oracle or perhaps, Glenn/Campbell, which I am more familiar with?

Have you tried looking up crime statistics for the area? If I had to compare the area, I'd say more like Stone/Oracle because Glenn/Campbell is more student area and don't consider it that bad.

I travel along Grant Road quite a bit, and only two areas along the Grant Road corridor make me uncomfortable at night: circa Grant/Alvernon and pretty much Grant/First Ave all the way to I-10 (including Stone Ave and Oracle Road). All the other areas seem fine to me. I agree with Subie2 RE Glenn/Campbell; the Samos neighborhood and vicinity are decent.

I use Grant Road as an example, because it is not that far from Glenn Street.

That area is really "street to street". Dodge-Flower (northwest side of the corner) has had issues over the years with property crime and meth use, partially because of some rehab facilities located there. It has gotten better than it was though. But then the area on the southeast side of the corner has always been relatively quiet and nice.
If you rent, rent a house. The apartments around there are just awful. There are definitely not many students living around there; it's too far out. If you want to go that low, you can live in the student ghetto south of campus.
