I'm thinking about taking my snow-loving dog to Mt. Lemmon to play in the snow on Christmas, assuming the snow hasn't melted by then. I only have a small car with no snow tires or chains. Are there areas to go play where the road isn't too dangerous to drive on? Also, what's the best way to get there from the Green Valley area?

It may not be the fastest, but the simplest route is probably I-19 to Sahuarita Road, then north on Houghton Road, which will take you directly to the Catalina Highway.

I drove up there a few days ago in a 4 cylinder Honda Civic. It wasn't too bad, but there was black ice on the road that concerned me a little bit. Regardless, there were many places to stop along the way to get out into the snow. By the time I left, the ice had mostly melted. Just keep an eye on the shady regions of the road. There is a certain point beyond which you cannot go without chains, but I didn't go that far. There were some other folks with their dogs up there as well. Actual flowing streams of water!

Thanks, tumamoc and BDMAC! I hope there will still be snow there tomorrow.

The snow will be there until spring.

Yep. Right in the middle of Tucson.

Awesome! Thanks! I'm going to love not having to deal with it at home but still getting to give my dog his snow fix. He would be happy if it snowed year 'round, so he'll be thrilled to go play in it.

Glad it worked out and this was a timely thread as I also have a dog (Brittany Spaniel) that will stay out in the snow until he's almost frozen. The gentleman that lives behind us in Tucson is a retired vet who taught at Purdue in veterinary science. He said dogs aren't much different than people and that after a few years in Tucson he won't like the snow as much as his coat and body thermostat will adapt to the warmer climates and previously tolerable temperatures will become uncomfortable. Until that happens, I'm sure we'll have to go up the mountain a couple of times a season for him to get his "fix".

What I found interesting was that it wasn't very cold. Chilly, but not the cold I'm used to when it snows. I don't have gloves or a winter coat, just a thin windbreaker, and I don't even have snow boots, just rubber rain boots, but I wasn't cold. That made it even more enjoyable.
