Hey folks, I am visiting Tucson soon and wanted to know if there are any restaurants/bars near the airport that are worth checking out? Doesn't seem like there's that many places. I don't really want to visit any big chain restaurants. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

One of Tucson's most famous Mexican restaurants is Mi Nidito, 1813 S. 4th Ave., Tucson, AZ, 85713. It's only about five miles from the Tucson International Airport. You can get driving directions on Mi Nidito's Yelp listing. I don't know what day and time you are coming to the city, but be warned that if it's a weekend, the wait at Mi Nidito can be long, as they don't take reservations.

My personal favorite Mexican restaurant to take visitors is El Minuto Cafe in Barrio Viejo, which many consider to be the longest operating Mexican restaurant in Tucson. It's mainly a small family place but it's interesting to see because it's next door to El Tiradito, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. El Tiradito (The Wishing Shine) is the only Catholic shrine in the United States dedicated to a sinner buried in unconsecrated ground and is a place where to this day people go to pray for their lost loves and causes. El Minuto Cafe is at 354 South Main Avenue, Tucson, AZ, 85701, farther from the airport than Mi Nidito, but still south of the city.

I've also looked at the thread linked above. My daughter will be flying in on Christmas Eve (around 6 pm) a couple of hours earlier than my son so I'm trying to find somewhere near the airport to eat that won't break the bank and other than Mexican fare. Doing a google search, I found a place called Amigos Burger and Beer. Anyone have any comments on Amigos?

Any suggestions for something that is not a chain?

Moderator cut: .

(you'll need to travel several miles from the airport to get to anything better than a chain or ho-hum local joint)

sorry....it's just that the airport is in a less-than-impressive part of town

Not really.

Besides, most of the restaurants will be closed on Christmas Eve so people can be home with the family. And when you say "non-Mexican" in South Tucson, you have just eliminated about 80% of the options.

Of course, you could always head to one of the two casinos as they will be open that evening. Casino del Sol would be the better bet.
