After the recent experience of the Phoenix woman riding back to the US on a bus in Sonora, I would probably be very hesitant to travel there by bus.

Great point, Windwalker . . .

Considering that is the only horror story to "make the headlines" recently and I bet there are many many more similar scenarios, I would be reluctant to venture across the border regardless of mode.

Traveling to Sonora--or any other Mexican state straddling the U.S. border, for that matter--is extremely inadvisable until further notice. Please have a wonderful day.

Not to minimize the seriousness of the recent incident involving the couple traveling from Los Mochis to Phoenix, I suspect that if there were more 'horror' stories regarding making such a trip into Sonora, we'd hear about them. Yes, there is a war underway in Mexico and parts of Sonora are directly impacted by it, but so many people travel by bus from Tucson and Phoenix to Hermosillo, Guaymas, San Carlos, Puerto Penasco, Bahia Kino and Alamos ... I think the 'record' is pretty clear that 99.9999% seem to travel trouble-free.
