My 21 year old son is working in Arivaca on a 'boys ranch' where they help rehab boys who've been in trouble. He works 8 days on, 6 days off. For his days off he is thinking of getting a place in Green Valley as it is the nearest city to Arivaca.

BUT..... Rental housing for folks under 55+ is scant. We found a grand total of two apartment complexes that accept people his age. When I looked on Google these apartments had bad reviews for being poorly cared, having indifferent management, and for having 'drug deals' in the parking lot.

The apartment complexes we found in Green Valley are:
Via Alamos Apartments and Sahuarita Mission Apartments

So my questions are:
Note: My son is an introvert, so when he is not working he will not be looking for a singles scene or anything like that. He prefers small towns and not too many people. He does not like to be around wannabe (or real) gangster types.
  • Do you know any of these complexes?
  • Is there a problem with crime, violence, gangs and/or drugs at these places?
  • What do you think of Vail for someone his age? Sahuarita? Other?
If there is not crime a problem in Green Valley, how are the grey panthers with young folk? Accepting and welcoming? Fearful and complaining? .....

21 years old? C'mon, its time for him to start having a normal social life. Living in GV at his age is repressive.

He WANTS to work on the ranch which is South of Green Valley an hour in Arivaca. It is his choice. He does not want to live in Tucson, drive is too long drive and not a desirable city. Don't judge. Just offer information please.

Has he considered Tubac, Nowanna?

Not my Cup Of Tea but it may work for him and, except for weekends, definitely quiet.

Good Luck

I have lived in Green Valley/Sahuarita since I was 26 yrs old. I had no other choice as I worked in Nogales. He will be just fine in GV. Look into Sandstone Apartments as well as the Valle Verde Townhomes. I lived at Valle Verde for several years. They are now individually owned but several come up for rent quite often. Check with some of the rental agencies in GV. They will have lists of what is available. The area is safe and he will have no issues. You can also look for rental homes in Sahuarita. They will cost a little more than an apartment though. Vail would be too far away if he is working in Arivaca. Tubac is nice but pretty darn expensive. His best bets are GV and Sahuarita and more than likely, Sandstone Apts. They are plenty of younger people living there.

I think I have an answer for you. Tubac - Embarcadaro - colorful townhomes in the Barrio de Tubac. Although there is are not many young people here - there are younger thinking/acting 30's - 40's people living over there and it includes an amazing resort style pool and workout facility. There are lots of service people working in the bars and restaurants and shops that are younger. It's a small town and safe and quiet. We leave our door open all day - We have a larger home in the subdivision... Neighbors look out for each other here. The Embarcadaro is run by the owners and there are service people around all the time and a model unit that is open all day. There is NO - 100% NO element of seedy/nasty stuff going on over here. In fact - many of the renters are border patrol ;-) so - as you can imagine - we don't even have much if anything in the way of undocumented people here either. The rates are reasonable and include some nice amenities. It's closer to Arivaca than Green Valley or any other town. It's a resort/tourist/retirement community with a nice mix of ages. He can't go wrong here.

I've lived in Green Valley for over 15 years (came here at age 48 when my father was sick, and stuck around after he died). The average age here is mid-70s and it's VERY quiet (too quiet for me). At one time, our 28-yr-old son lived with us for about 6 months, saving money to move to LA. He's also an introvert, but does enjoy music and being with a small group of friends. He was bored in Green Valley (the restaurants close by 8 p.m.!) but liked some things about Tucson (some entertainment geared to the college kids, shows at the casinos, cultural activities at the university), plus he enjoyed the recreational opportunities - mountain biking and hiking in Madera Canyon, Sabino Canyon, etc., and we're 4 hours to Rocky Point, on the water in Mexico. There's even skiing on Mt. Lemmon in the mountains on Tucson's north side.

I think the suggestions above from jksn and Mary were good. The Embarcadero development in Tubac would definitely be a good location, only minutes to Arivaca. Tubac is an art community, with nice people of all ages, but mostly retired. Safe and quiet, as is Green Valley. Several decent restaurants in Tubac, no fast food, no grocery or drug store (available in GV). Sahuarita, just north of Green Valley, might be another possibility. Younger than GV and Tubac, family-oriented, grocery, restaurants, Walmart, other chain stores, movie theatre and several churches, if your son is so inclined. It's mostly newer subdivisions w/larger homes and small yards. No apartments, but there are always homes for rent; unfortunately I didn't see any rentals for under $900. Rio Rico is another very small community south of Arivaca and Tubac -- not much goes on there, but there are a few condos and small houses for rent -- very reasonable. Grocery and a few restaurants, not much else. All these towns are along I-19 and an easy drive to everything. Check Realtor.com and Zillow rentals to get an idea what's available.

Tucson would definitely be a long drive to Arivaca (as would Vail), but you shouldn't disparage Tucson. It's a nice place, definitely not fancy, and more like a big town than a city. Mostly working class, very family-oriented, some higher income neighborhoods with shops/restaurants to match and, of course, the University of Arizona. Good medical care, several parks, a small zoo, lots of restaurants and, except for around 5 p.m., few traffic problems. I hope your son will feel comfortable enough to visit Tucson sometime. Driving carefully is a necessity, as Pima County makes a lot of their money on speeding tickets and red-light runners!

I hope your son finds someplace to live that he likes. He deserves a pat on the back for doing something that helps other people.
