I don't know if it was Gates Pass Rd. I've looked at it on Google street view and it doesn't look right. I'm going to need to drive there. We are going to be there during Easter week so maybe I will get some time. Otherwise it is going to need to wait until this summer when we move.

Pretty sure that's not Gates Pass. I don't see any saguaros in the picture. Gates Pass is full of saguaros. Doesn't look like anything in the Tucson area. Looks like east of Tucson, somewhere between Vail and New Mexico, maybe Safford or Thatcher, or possibly south of Tucson between Arivaca and Nogales.

I had just assumed that scene was filmed along Kinney Road or some other in Tucson Mountain Park or Saguaro NP, but I decided to find out. And it appears Steve Pickering is correct: Sonoran Desert National Monument, Gila Bend, Arizona:

The Wraith (1986) - Filming Locations - IMDb

Showing all 7 filming locations

2128 East 5th Street - Tucson, Arizona, USA
(Keri Johnson's house)

2755 East Benson Highway, Tucson, Arizona, USA
(Big Kay's Burgers)

Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Tucson, Arizona, USA

Sabino Canyon, Tucson, Arizona, USA

Sonoran Desert National Monument, Gila Bend, Arizona, USA

4th Avenue & 7th Street, Tucson, Arizona, USA
(beginning of chase scene)

Catalina Highway, Tucson, Arizona, USA

In SickofIL's post, he has a link to the filming locations. One paragraph says the race scenes were filmed on the road by Tucson Studios and the Desert Museum, which would be Kinney Rd. So Gates Pass isn't a bad guess....

The opening sequence was shot out in the Vail area on Marsh Station Road. There is a cattle sign in the picture and there are lots of cattle signs on Marsh Station. The boom truck used for the shot and the telephoto lens distorts everything bring a mountain several miles away into the shot.

I have never actually seen that shot in the movie or the previews. 18287 E Marsh Station Road gives you an idea where it could have been shot.
