From time to time I’ve seen questions raised in the Arizona section on City-Data about trips into Mexico. My neighbor in Green Valley had to go today for a dental appointment so my wife and I decided to go along to see what it would be like. Thus, my “report” (if you can call it that) is more for information on the “how to” of getting into and out of Nogales Mexico for a short visit.
The ride from Green Valley is pretty short (around 20 miles one way from where we live) and all on Route 19. You stay on 19 to the end. At some point you’ll come upon a parking lot on your right hand side (we opted not to take a car into Mexico). For $4 dollars you can park all day. The parking area is fenced in and, according to my friends, perfectly safe.
From there you walk a short distance (rather hard to explain) to the border crossing point for pedestrian traffic (autos go in via a nearby but different place). There are signs as you get close indicating you are entering Mexico. Once in the building we were just waved on by the Mexican border guard and entered Nogales proper.
Some words about Nogales. Well, for one thing, you’re in Mexico (duh). People will try to pull you into various stores (even call to you from across a street), sell you stuff, whatever. One guy whispered to me did I want “pharmacutica” or a girl. As my spouse was ten feet behind me I indicated her to him with my thumb and told him that he’d have to clear his offer with my wife first. No sale.
After dealing with the dentist (a modern, professional operation) we walked a few blocks to a small restaurant and had a bit of lunch. Cost for four people was $27 dollars before tip. People there were very pleasant and helpful (as were just about all the folks we ran into in Nogales, even the guy offering me drugs and women. He gave us excellent directions to the border exit.)
There were (and normally are) two pedestrian lines exiting the country into the United States from Nogales. The very long line is mostly Mexican nationals heading across the border. That line had to be no less than an hour long. The other line is for seniors and the handicapped. We were seniors and that’s where we went. Zero line.
One unsolicited note here: I can’t understand why the US cannot make it easier for Mexican nationals to enter into the United States. The vast majority of these folks are very nice people who just want to spend their money in our country. Well, let’s let them!
When in the senior line we had to wait until a customs agent motioned us to enter the rotating door (ten minutes, more or less). Once inside the custom’s area you take your passport (you did bring your passport, right?!?), place it in a device that reads it and, a few moments later, it directs you to proceed to the customs inspector.
Pleasant guy working the desk asked if I had anything to declare (I didn’t) and waved me on.
Back to the parking lot (a five minute walk) and we were off for Green Valley.
I’m sure I’ve left some obvious but useful information out of my little report. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Rich
Route 19 takes you right to Nogales Mexico. Here are a couple of the road signs you will see as you get close to the border area.
Four bucks for parking.
Park the car. Lot was about 80% empty.
Sort of empty lot.
Head toward border crossing for pedestrians.
Down a walkway.
Where I come from this is called "a clue."
Enter building.
Nogales. Note the phone booth. Ain't many of them around these days!
The small restaurant where we had lunch.
After going through customs, back up the ramp and to the car!

excelente informe, Ricardo....
I hope you don't mind me adding other comments for those planning a first-time visit....this is a good thread to start
yes, no reason at all to drive across the line if you're just doing a touristy day visit....park on this side, walk over, and don't worry about it.....the shopping and stuff begins immediately "straight ahead" and to the west for a few blocks....lots of the same stuff in shop after shop and sometimes the vendors can be aggressive....haggling is required in most places, but there are a few fancier places with fixed prices.... watch where you step as the curbs, manholes, sidewalks, streets can sometimes be in poor repair.....dress very casually and try not to be a "loud American".....
the border area of Nogales, Sonora, has been a tourist destination for many decades and you'll see some poverty and desperate people...it's not the real Mexico, but is a fun place to do the border-town thing....I don't think timid visitors need to worry about crime: tourism is the border area's bread-and-butter and they wouldn't allow pickpockets or gangsters to screw it up....they are probably already hurting because of the drug war publicity and need tourists now more than ever....nevertheless, probably a good idea to keep your wallet in your front pocket, don't wear flashy bling, etc.....
those planning a visit and concerned about the food/drink can look on yelp and the other usual online places to see what restaurants are currently popular....admittedly, even I still wouldn't "drink the water" down there....order bottled water, bottled or canned soda/beer, etc....
and bring your passport these days!!!!!

Ed's Garage has given me love everytime at $5 a day. Word of advice. The eastside of the Railroad tracks where my favorite restaurant La Roca is located along with the strip clubs, do yourselves a favor and cross back into the USA at that crossing. It only has about 1/3 of the lines as the main one has on the westside of the railroad tracks.
If your goal is just to eat at La Roca and bypass haggling with the hawkers on the westside of the tracks, When nearing the crossing after walking down from Ed's Garage, just go up the stairwell on the Arizona side and you cross the railroads and the vehicle crossing and can simply enter on the eastside and walk a couple short blocks to La Roca.

Just before you go through the gates to Mexico when coming down from Ed's garage, walk up the stairs to where US Customs is. Turn left and cross the bridge and you then are still in Nogales,AZ but on th eastside of the road/tracks. Enter there and you can walk a couple blocks to La Roca. Near La Roca is another bridge that crosses the tracks if you want to haggle on the Obregon section on the westside.

One other thing. The line I went through (for seniors and the handicapped) also was valid for people with a certain type of pass. I saw the name of the pass but don't recall it at the moment. Sinestri(?) (well, I know the name started with an "S") or some similar name.
I "think" it's for Mexican nationals coming and going across the border, but that's purely a guess on my part.

Until the mid 1980s Dad and I would often go to Nogales. At that time the most popular eating place was "The Cavern". I don't remember where it was located but it was a large cave carved into the side of a mountain. Local history stated it was once a prison and there were holes in the walls that they said was where the prisoners were chained. The food was great but often we would go to a restaurant (on a corner I think) that was also great.
At that time a passport was not required, and there was no parking lot. We would park at a Safeway grocery parking lot on the US side, pay a guy a dollar, and he would protect our truck while we were gone. We went so often that I decided to get some bargain Pesos from one of the street money-changers. In less than a year the bottom fell out of the Mexican economy and I was stuck with several thousand worthless Pesos. I still have some of them even after giving away many to friends as a novelty.
There was a store that was similar to our J.C. Penny, (with no haggling) where we did our serious shopping. If we were in the mood we would "play the game" with the small hole-in-the-wall shops and often buy stuff.
Dad financed a farm south of Nogales, near Magdalena, and I always enjoyed going down there. It was interesting getting through the border there. Lots of questions and paperwork, and while that was going on a dozen kids would be cleaning your vehicle windows and expecting a tip when you came out of the office. We would take a pocket full of quarters and pass them around.
Several of your photos (in your Sasabe Thread) shows Baboquivari Peak. That's an interesting climb to get to the top. Not me, but friends! Oral history states that is the center of the Papago Universe.

Does anyone know what the if any restrictions are for buying insulin in Nogales and bringing it back to the USA?
Is there a quantity limit?
Do you need a US prescription?
Any limits at border patrol?
Thanks
