I am considering moving to Tucson in the spring (currently living in Central AZ). I am looking for work at either the UofA, or one of the art galleries, museums, or theaters(for costuming) in Tucson. From reading these posts, I see that public transportation is a big problem in the city. I don't have a car, so I would want to live in a central location. Here are my questions:

1. Where is the gallery district/museum block in relation to downtown? If I got a job in one of these areas, would I be able to take the bus or ride a bike to work? Or would I have to drive?

2. I would like to live in a quiet, diverse, progressive/liberal neighborhood. But NOT a party area. What neighborhoods would you recommend considering my transportation needs and the areas in which I'm looking for work?

3. Can anyone tell me about downtown Tucson, as far as neighborhoods/living goes? Are there grocery stores? Shops? Or mainly businesses? Can you still see the mountains and nature when downtown?

Basically, I'm looking for a job in an arts related field, an efficient way to get to and from work (without having a long commute), and a quiet, diverse, ecclectic neighborhood. I'm not into the party scene, so bars and that type of nightlife are not an issue. I'd like to be close enough to the University to attend events and things there, even if I'm not working there. Diversity is important, as I am in an interracial relationship and my partner and I need to feel comfortable where ever we move to.

I briefly toyed with the idea of moving to Phoenix, but I HATE the sprawl, the heat, the vapid nothingness of that "city". (No offense to the Phoenicians, just based on my experiences there)

Thanks in advance for any advice!

You can bike most anywhere.

Not sure about a liberal area of town, or a liberal area of Arizona for that matter.

Downtown Tucson is a lot like most citis with a large amount o sprawl......not a lot to attract people to drive all that way. 4th Ave. isn't too bad though.

Less sprawl than PHX, yes. But you may still find it rather frustrating to get around. Bus system is okay, but could be much better. Depends on what part of town your employment ends up being in. For example, to La Encantada Mall area - bus not as often as to tucson mall.

Galleries have sprouted up throughout the area - though concentration downtown and 4th ave. maybe best for that. Museums downtown and at Univ of Arizona, just a few miles east of there on Speedway.

No grocery store downtown, so if u live there will have to figure out food situation.

Politically, Tucson is generally considered liberal compared to rest of state.

Maybe check-out housing north of Speedway & west of Campbell - around the Univ.Med Center? Or even downtown - if u can scope out grocery.
I like the older, cul-de-sac neighborhoods along Silverbell rd between Speedway & Grant too - all good bus access, eclectic population, educated to blue collar.....

Mountains close by. With right angle, can see 1 of our 4 mtn.ranges from any part of town.

Lots to consider. Welcome!
