What were the reasons you chose to retire in Tucson versus Phoenix?

Well. We started coming to Tucson in 1996 to follow Spring Training for the Colorado Rockies, and each March we'd house hunt. We liked Tucson immediately because it was smaller, had character, and even though it has all the fast food/malls/cinemaplexes/etc, it didn't have a massive interstate system dividing it up. It had nice neighborhoods, each with their own personality, and lots of smaller, mom and pop type places. We were living an house west of Colorado Springs, deep in the mountains with Pikes Peak in our back yard. Very rural, almost like Summerhaven if every house were on 5 acres. We'd lived in Denver when we first were married and starting out, and the idea of being in another megalopolis like Denver was completely out of the question, so Phoenix wasn't even a consideration.

When the Rockies moved up to Phoenix, we'd already bought out snowbird condo in Oro Valley, and loved having the mountains in our back yard, wildlife (we're in the foothills), birds, and even though everything we need is within 2 miles, where we are has a very country-ish feeling. Much more to our tastes. We felt it was the best of both worlds ~~country like, yet as we're getting older, having amenities nearby is important. Driving an hour to the doctor just wouldn't work anymore, so we bid Colorado goodbye and made our Tucson snowbird condo our permanent home.

I do not like the congestion of Phoenix. The few times that I have been there, the traffic has reminded me on the Dan Ryan in Chicago.

Tucson has more of a "small town" feel.
