I'd like to buy a home that borders some empty land that hopefully won't be developed. Which are the neighborhoods to look at? Are Santa Catalina and Tucson Mountain Park protected? Is there a list of protected areas somewhere?

Would like my backyard to look out into an expansive view.

Thank you!!

I don't know about "best" but the preserves off twin peaks & I10 border on protected land. They might be up your alley.

My GF tells me that she's heard rumors that the AZ gov't is thinking about selling it off but I've not seen anything that indicates that.

Chris.

Parts of all of the mountain ranges are protected, but how close you can get generally depends on how much you are willing and able to spend. Yesterday, for example, I was doing some tooling around in the far West neighborhoods at the base of the Tucson mountains. Beautiful areas, but lots of stuff you couldn't get to due to security gates and the like. Out of curiosity I checked some prices and - yep - anything under a half-million isn't going to get you through those security gates unless you're cleaning the pools!

The same, obviously, goes for any of the hilly, view-lot locations around town. The far East side is more reasonable, so maybe start out there in the Rincon Foothills?

If you wish to move south of the city, look at Sahuarita Highlands. Very pretty area. All homes are on 1-2 acre lots and surrounded by protected land. Not many homes go on the market and it is about 20-25 to downtown Tucson though.

WOW, what a gorgeous place. That's some custom architecture. Did you notice how the windows framed the spectacular views?

It's lovely but the "detached zones" are a dealbreaker for me!

I don't like the detached zones either. I do like the covered patio between them but would somehow enclose it.
