Wink First visit Tucson advice

I am planning my first visit to Tucson to check out jobs, real estate and whether it's a good fit for me. I'm a currently single RN, so will be traveling alone, and renting a car for 5 days. Any advice on where to stay? I'd like a hotel pretty close to the airport, (as long as it's not too loud) and also close to some decent restaurants, shopping and local attractions..and of course in a safe area. Specific hotel names would be helpful, as I'll probably book online..Would like to avoid a lot of freeway driving too..Is that too much to ask?!

Here's a link to several airport hotels.

You'll find many places to eat around the airport because, well, its an airport and there are also many business in the general vicinity.

As far as freeway driving, it won't be too much better than surface streets because of the construction. What hospitals were you going to look at? My wife is an RN at TMC over on the eastside if you have any question about that hospital.

Just saw you are from Madison, my dad and extended family are from Milwaukee. You'll definitely appreciate the winters here if you do make the move!

Very helpful.. Actually TMC is one of the places I may interview at. Any suggestions for behavioral health RN jobs helpful. I am, of course, checking internet sites too.I'll check out those hotel sights... And after this winter, it's hard to think of even 1 more here. We shovel almost every day..It either snows or drifts. Just wondering how I'd handle the summers there, but think it would be a good trade-off

Arizona ghost town map
Ghost Town Map | Arizona | California | Colorado | Nevada | New Mexico | Idaho | Montana | Utah | USA | US

A day or two day trip up to Flagstaff would be cool too

Go up and stay one night in Sedona (Go through Jerome Ghost Town on the way)

Stay in Sedona, then go West to Williams arizona and stay in the Route 66 Inn
I had a good time there.

Then go to the grand canyon.....

From there you can go to Las Vegas and or Laughlin Nevada via old route 66 ....

from there you can drive down through California along the colorado river -
to Yuma and then across to Tucson again.

Or you can back track on I-40, or from the grand canyon and visit Flagstaff, The indian ruins and Sunset Crater, Meteor Crater, Winslow Arizona (Standin'on the corner park) , the peterified forest (in Holbrook Arizona)
and stay at the route 66 wigwam motel (You stay in a tee pee with a TV.) Now you know what indians live like in the modern world From there you can drive through Show Low (and the canyons) down 191...back to I-10

can take 77 south from Holbrook
to 60 south in Showlow
From Show Low - go to Globe on 60 South
You'll pass through a winding scenic canyon with hairpin turns
then L onto 70
take 70 to Safford and then R onto 191
take 191 to I-10 then 10 west to tucson.

That makes for a good 4-5 day loop through arizona
including a couple days in tucson

you might also check out the grand canyon train from Williams to the grand canyon

If you're gonna do TMC then I'd get a hotel somewhere near there. I can't think of any off hand but I know thee are some in the area. TMC is just down Grant from 'restaurant row' on Tanque Verde (China Thai is awsome but the duck is kinda dry sometimes...). Definitely check out Pinnacle Pete's (and be sure to wear a tie - lol) for a sasaparilla and some good turista flavor.

There's an Extended Stay America (I believe that's the exact name, but I'm not 100% sure) at the corner of Grant & Rosemont. Very convenient for you (1/2 mile at the most to TMC) and generally a good central location. They have kitchenettes. Don't know when you're coming, but right now the rates will be double because of the Gem Show in town. I used to work across from this hotel and we were always kidding that the gem show must've started when we saw the double rates on their wall.

Default Check out Inn Suites Tucson

I stayed at the Inn Suites Tucson which is right on the highway exit near the U of A in Downtown Tucson near Speedway Blvd. Easy access to anywhere in Tucson and quick access to the airport.

There's a hotel shuttle to the airport and other shuttle vans you can use locally to get to the airport to the hotel.

Tucson has an extensive bus system so you can get almost anywhere in the metro area via bus.

Welcome to Sun Tran - Tucson, Arizona

Most attractions are a short drive from the city no more than 2 hours away (max) depending on what you want to see

I'd highly recommend a visit to KITT Peak and the night program

I agree here, there are tons of restaurants right there. Just in case you need to loop the place up it is actually called Pinnacle Peak. Definitely a place worth stopping in for some good ole fashioned "Cowboy Food". Not too mention there is a little minature old west city in there where you can check out gun mock gun fights, watch a little train go around and go through nick nack shops.. good times!!!
