When we moved out here last year, we wanted to find a place that offered a short-term lease as we were in the market to buy a house. Any of the complexes were crazy-expensive for a short term lease.

We ended up finding a place on Craigslist in the northwest area. The owner has two old guest ranches that he's broken up into apartments that rent on a weekly basis. Ours was a two bedroom santa fe style duplex with a fireplace in a really nice area just outside of city limits. It was $220 a week which included electricity and water. Not a bad deal. They have several different units which are probably listed on Craigslist now (they're always on there). Might be an option for you, especially if you don't want to be tied down by a lease.

There were many condo conversions going on in 2005 and even 2006 on the N and NE side, but those complexes you have in mind may still be rentals. I don't recall saying my own suggestions cover the whole city of Tucson and are totally inclusive not leaving room for others...

Smile Searching for a 1 bedroom house near Tucson???

Hello all,
I'll be going to UArizona this fall and I'm looking for a 1 bedroom house in a safe place within half hour drive of UArizona. I'm looking to spend about $750 per month and even willing to go up to $850. I'm also 33 years old and I love my privacy so if you can think of any safe towns with good housing and low crime, please share. Again, I'm willing to drive a half hour one way if it means quiet nights at home. Plus I love the desert, especially at night so an obscure place would be great. Thanks...

Well, there are hardly any 1-bedroom houses per se, but on the other hand many people in the very nice Sam Hughes neighborhood (next door to U of A) rent their guest houses. They can be usually found on craigslist and are about in this price range.

Thanks for the response, what about any other lofts or otherwise independent housing situations? Would I have better luck trying to search smaller local papers?

You're welcome. I've never really looked seriously into such rentals myself. There are rentals on the local MLS - www.tarmls (broken link) - as well as in local papers. There are some new lofts downtown. Perhaps you can find rentals there, too.

To be honest, I'd very cautious if I were you. Renting from a private landlord can turn into a nightmare if you're not aware of his financial situation. You don't wanna move in and have the house foreclosed on you soon thereafter... That's why I believe the guest houses in Sam Hughes are a very good idea. It's a nice and quiet neighborhood and very close to U of A. Besides, the owners live in the main house and the risk I mentioned is slim to none. I've no vested interest of any kind other than trying to help you. Good luck!

After searching on-line for awhile, an isolated 1-2 bedroom house is hard to find. That fact, makes my decision whether or not to accept a lease more difficult if I do find one. I think I found a possible candidate west of Tucson near Saguaro National Park West. Does anyone know what that area is like? I checked out maps and it does look nice and secluded but what about crime? Is it worse in isolated areas west of Tucson? Thanks in advance. This forum is an invaluable resouce for these types of things.

This area is generally pretty nice, but I'm not very familiar with it. I take it it's a house. I don't know if there are many (if any) apartment complexes there.
