Thanks for your quick reply Clnconcpts!
Actually, I'm not certain as to the name of the area; thought it was Sycamore Park, but it very well could be Sycamore Canyon as you suggested. All I know is that it's supposed to be somewhere on the East side of town. So Sahuarita has rental properties? That's strange, isn't it? It's supposed to be a master planned community and all... Hhmmm. I'm going to be there in one week, and I'll need to make a decision quickly. If you can give me some suggestions as to which part of town to look into, that would be fantastic! We will be buying our home, hubby will be working on DM, and we have two elementary-aged girls. Thanks again, CDL-A |

I also want to be in a safe place for my girls to play. Additionally, our family is very diverse. I'm a direct descendant of Casper (very white), hubby is Filippino, youngest daughter is Chinese, other daughter is transgender... We need to be in an accepting community. Any thoughts? |

Wow Clnconcpts, if everyone else in Tucson is as open and friendly as you are, I am thrilled to be moving there!
You're so gracious to make an offer to take time out of your day like that, but I've already lined up to work with a Realtor. I am sending out these feelers to help save time for both of us when I get there Monday. I don't want to land without having some idea of where I want to be. Besides, I already asked her which areas are better and which ones to avoid, and she let me know she's not allowed to tell me that. I'm so naive, I never considered such a limitation. This has been very productive for me though, now I know about Sycamore Canyon and Pepper Viner home. I'm in the know. |

Crime is everywhere in Tucson now. Stay away from I-10 and North Oracle Road over to First Avenue. Stay away from Speedway and the Southwest side. Swan and Sunrise is very nice, as is Sabino canyon, but far from the middle of town. Broadway is very nice, Campbell Avenue is pretty good (especially River and Campbell), and the UA area is nice but lots of property crime occurs north, west, and south of campus. There is a great youth-oriented gated complex on Campbell and Blacklidge called "Casa Club". rents will be higher near UA. Good luck!

There are several apartment complexes between Prince and River on Campbell. Near the Safeway shopping center. Area is pretty good. U of A Agriculture area, lots of medical complexes, quick drive to Wetmore for Best Buy, Applebees, Wal-Mart, Taco Bell, etc. Convenient to most shopping needs. But not close to Ft. Huachuca by any stretch!

Maybe I shouldn't jinx myself, but I disagree. My daily life is mainly conducted on the E and SE side of town and I feel perfectly safe.

We spent 5 months at the Riverside Suites at Limberlost and Campbell, next to Trader Joe's, and I felt perfectly safe. My teenage son routinely walked to the Tucson Mall and along Wetmore and never had a bad encounter. We walked our Yorkies at night along Limberlost and felt incredibly safe. We also walked over to St. Phillip's Plaza for dinners at night, and walked to the Post Office on River. I never met anyone unscrupulous or threatening, and again, we felt extremely safe.

Sahuarita (which is basically the Rancho Sahuarita development) is a nice but quickly growing community. They've opened up quite a bit of shopping and there will be a small (calling it "express") library branch opening there soon. However, the schools may see problems in the near future. Sahuarita High School (the only high school in the district) is going to be well past capacity this year and there was a story in the paper a couple of days ago indicating that they did not have the money to start on new schools as they had planned.
Vail's in the same boat, but it's a larger district and can likely absorb the additional student population. I prefer the Vail area anyway, because I think it's much prettier. I think it really depends upon where you're looking at working. If you're willing to live in the suburbs, then there are good areas in every direction away from Downtown. If you're not working Downtown, then you should look to move near to where you're going to be working. Also the TPD crime stats will not work for almost all suburbs because they're not in the city. Catalina Foothills, Sahuarita and a majority of Vail are all outside of the city, not to mention Marana, Oro Valley and Tanque Verde, etc. Tucson has a general property crime problem and no area is completely safe. The suburbs are generally safer though, as they are in most metro areas. |
