Default safe areas to rent in Tucson?

I'm 18, female, and just out of highschool. my bf is going out to Ft. Huachuca to finish his army training. i'm trying to earn a degree in massage therapy and the closest place i found was Apollo College in Tucson. i've heard a lot (online and through friends) and a lot of it is either negative or neutral (saying it depends on the area). even an in and out again ex-con has said that he'd never live there again. also, if i move out there i will be making less than here (currently at $8/hr). surely it's not that bad? i have no family here (in missouri), and would rather not stay behind. so to sum things up, i'm trying to find a safe neighborhood where i can rent a place that's not too pricey (as i'll probably be starting at minimum wage), small (doesn't have to be anything fancy, as i'll be the only one there), hopefully close to Apollo College, and that will allow me to bring our kitten along. we'd rather not be pushed into marriage to find affordable, safe places.

Two questions, Havenschick . . .

Where in Tucson is the Apollo College Campus (not sure but I believe there are a couple) and what do you consider a "safe comfortable range" for rent?

As for SAFE . . . Tucson is no worse than any other city of equal size. Just do your homework and avoid the all too common drug and gang areas.

Good Luck

apollo College 3550 N Oracle Rd, although i've been talking it over w/ my bf. if it coms right down to it college can come later, after he's been stationed.

as far as comfortable for rent, most of the college students here are paying between $350 and $500. i looked up apartments for rent and found a few at about $500/month but i didn't know if these areas were safe. even gated communities aren't safe if the wrong people are behind the gates.

Great point, Havenschick.

That Apollo College is not too far from me so I am fairly familiar with the area. I would not recommend anything West and South of the campus but, with a little research, you should be able to find something decent for about $500.

Good Luck

I personally would not choose that area, which is Oracle/Prince. It is highly concentrated with registered sex offenders. Sex Offender InfoCenter - Address Search Results
Maybe not AS concentrated as other areas but still pretty bad. If you could afford to go more North on Oracle (up to River or even further to Orange Grove) I would strongly suggest that. I'm thinking you could probably find something in your price range around there. The further North on Oracle road that you can go the better (FYI)
Whatever you do...DO NOT go further South on Oracle (Glenn street or Miracle Mile)!!!! Horrible horrible area!!!!!!!!!!!! In fact Miracle Mile is known as "hooker" street (which by the way isnt too far from Prince/oracle)...just FYI.

My mother in law did have a place that she rented at Prince/Country Club (more East) and it was a really cute 1 bedroom for $500 and the area seemed pretty decent. Not the best but for your price range pretty good.

Hope that helps! If you have any other questions feel free...I have grown up and lived in Tucson my entire life.

P.S. Dont live on South or Southwest side of Tucson...ever

To add to Jenml-- If you have to live in the s or s/w go for Sahuarita or Vail.
Yup- the area around your campus is not so great, but fear not, it is a quick drive to safer places.
Check out the sex offernder section, as it will easily show you where the bad parts of town are. You will see stacks and stacks of sex offenders living there. Other places have none. I think it has to do with how easily and background check-free it is to get an anaprtment in those areas that makes it attractive to sex-offenders?

If you check the City of Tucson listings, the police dept. has a map of Tucson which shows the incidence of crime in the entire area. It's easy to read.

You should be able to find a studio apartment for less than $500/month in many safe neighborhoods in Tucson. If you stay north of Glenn and east of Campbell, I think you would generally be pretty safe. Lots of other good areas, too, but that's just a rough guide.

Question Sycamore Park?

Does anyone know about Sycamore Park? Or how about Vail? Also, what's the word on Rancho Sahuarita? It's really scary moving to a new city ; whether your young like the woman who opened this thread, or older moving your family there (that's me).

I did check out that TPD Crime Stats link posted above, which was a bit surprising, but I'm still left wondering where would be the smartest move.

Is it sycamore canyon? Vail is nice and quite. Sahuarita has a few things built within the community which is nice..The main problem i have with the area,Is the builder allowed investors to buy into the area. So, you will have renters in the area as well.
