Default Jobs/employment picture in Tucson

I'm thinking about moving to Tucson this fall (2008). Currently I work as a freelance editor for companies located in the northeast U.S., but I might want to get a full-time job in Tucson. In general, what's the employment situation in Tucson now, especially in professional, managerial fields?

Thanks for any & all input & info.

The national unemployment average as of 6/08 is 5.5%. In Tucson the average is 3.8% as of 5/08. Check out the internet job boards to see the amount of opportunities available in your field. I searched for a technical position last fall and had a few offers to pick from. I've read many opinions about how AZ is the land of low paying jobs with minimal opportunities. There is plenty of low paying jobs, no more and no less than anywhere else in the states. On the other side of the spectrum, there is plenty of well paid positions available. It is up to the individual's potential to fall into one category or another.

Good luck with your job hunt.

Tucson's job picture is VERY bleak to say the least. Nothing but call center jobs, retail jobs and restaurant jobs. When you see Flashey ads that say that this company pays $10.00 hourly, PLEASE, DO YOUR RESEARCH! go in depth of what the company is, and what the position entails. Chances are if you see an ad for AFNI, Convergys and Citi, they ARE a call center. This is just my point of view of Tucson's job market. Good luck on the job hunt.

Angry Beyond fed up with job search!!

I had to take a stupid call center job at one of these companies a few months ago & I'm STILL stuck there! Been on the search for months--there is just nothing out there!! Hence my 'Frustrated' title. Jobs here suck! The only good jobs require years of experience or a bachelor's degree--lots of medical type jobs IF you have experience. I am at the point of feeling so hopeless. And I agree--how can anyone afford to live on the salaries they pay here in Tucson?? Oh my God, don't get me started at how low they pay people here in comparison to the same job in other states--

Anyone out there who may not have a 4-year degree but still have a decent job in this town that is not call center, retail or restaurant?? I have reached my breaking point. HELP!

Don't feel bad. Even WITH a degree, there's another factor - expierence. If you don't have expierence, most companies won't even give you a glance.

If there's anything worse than having a job that you hate, it's not having a job at all. You might try and re-work your resume and look up Tucson top employers.

The collections industry, medical and IT field seem to have lots of openings.

This is why even though i can't delivery drive anymore because of too much stress on my car, I have chosen to take a pay cut to stay in the same restaurant as a different position because I'm afraid if I don't stay employed there while I go to school I'll NEVER find another job in time to pay my bills! Especially one that's flexible; most low skilled jobs want you full time or all week days and I can't do that with school!

Thumbs up Job Fair!

You might want to check out the Tucson Job Fair coming next Wednesday (a week from today), 12 November. They claim to have over 150 employers that will be there looking to hire full-time employees. It starts at noon and runs until 5:00 I think. It's at the TCC (Tucson Convention Center).

I plan to go, dressed to start work immediately, with loads of resumes in hand to give out to anyone willing to take one from me. Like "moving-to-AZ" I feel about at the end of my rope looking for a job. And then its always a challenge to muster up the enthusiasm to appear peppy and outgoing when I drop off an application, just to hear that "We are currently accepting applications, but we don't expect to start our next hiring cycle until next spring." Oh, yes, well thank you, here's my resume... Ugh!

Nice. I might have to check this out. Phoenix is too noisy and drives me nuts, time to come home.
