Actually they are not illegal in California or Arizona, radar detectors are only illegal to use in Virginia & Washington D.C.

What you might have been thinking of are laser jammers which are illegal in Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virgina, Colorado, & Washington D.C. And radar jammers are illegal in all 50 states.

The difference between them is laser & radar jammers interfere with police radar, whereas radar detectors simply detect radar.

I'm not sure where they got that information, but radar detectors are only illegal in the two states mentioned. I've used one often and never had problems, but never been pulled over. However, I know people who use them all the time that have been pulled over and there were never problems.

Bottom line though is you can use one either here in California or out there in Arizona and you will be fine, no worries.

I concur. I commuted 100 miles/day on a motorcycle for three years in CA with a radar detector mounted on my handlebars in plain sight. In fact, I got a laser speeding ticket on that bike. Cops couldn't care less about the detector.

I don't travel without a radar detector. But then again, I usually keep my speed within 9 mph over anyway.

Yeah, same here. Had one for years. If it helps you avoid one ticket, it's already paid for itself.

Slightly off topic, but I thought I read that there are unmanned speed detecting radars at certain intersections in Tucson, so that you could get a ticket in the mail, and not even realize you had done anything.

Anyone know where the locations of those things are? Would be good to know. Also, what do they look like? Are they visible?

I know of one - Wilmot & 22nd. Yes, the cameras are visible. I think there are a couple more, but I don't recall where they were.
