Default Desert Rats

Hello, I live in the foothills of the Catalina's-East Side.
I am having a major Rat problem, fortunitly not in my home as of yet. What can I do to rid myself of this problem without killing them? I have a dog and wouldn't want him to get into any poison.I am wondering is there a natural way to keep them away from the house and firewood.
Taking any and all suggesstions. They are also vindictive littler critters.I moved their home away from my house and it came back last night and ate most of my catus I had been growing for 2 yrs.Up on a table.

There was a time when these Desert Rats roamed the dunes.

Get a cat? What about those fake owls people put on the top of their houses to scare of pigeons - do you think it'd work for rats, too? There's humane traps that you can get, too - just make sure you check them daily, EVERY day. I found this out the hard way when I gave up on ever catching the mouse in our basement only to find that, in my time of not checking, I actually caught him and he died in the trap from the hungries

Conversely, you could set a whole swarm of rattlesnakes loose in your yard.

I bought it at www.LDUcompany.com
It worked great until my dog got a hold of it and just about half ate it. If he had any money I would make him pay for it. I guess I will have to go order another one.

Darn, I thought you had the Edward-Abbey-wannabe type of desert rat hanging around your house...
