Commuting from Tubac to Tucson International Airport?
My husband is interviewing for several jobs with Raytheon. It looks like all of their job sites are around Tucson International Airport.
We both love Tubac, and hubby is asking if it's possible to commute up 19 every day from there?
He always says he doesn't mind driving for an hour as long as he's not stopped in traffic jams or sitting at a bunch of traffic lights.

Yes, it's certainly possible to make that commute without a lot of traffic. Tubac is about 40 miles south of the Tucson airport. During rush hour, there would be almost no traffic on I-19 until you hit Green Valley/Sahuarita, about halfway to Tucson. Even at that point, the traffic would not be horrible.
After exiting the highway, you'd have to drive a mile or two east on a surface street to hit the Raytheon facilities.
I'm sure I don't have to mention that such a commute sounds great when gas is $2 a gallon, less so when it's $4 a gallon.

Tubac Commute
Tubac to Raytheon will generally be a nice quiet drive. The occasional wreck on I-19 will slow you down but you will have that anywhere. A lot of Raytheon people live out by me in Oro Valley so commuting from Tubac is a breeze compared to that. Work in Tucson, live in Tubac,,,,,,,,, , that's a sweet deal!

What's the latest on the checkpoint? I heard they were going to permanently put it at one of the exits. It used to move between Peck Canyon in Rio Rico to Amado. Things change. I do recalll some GV residents complaining about having to go to the restroom, while there was a mile long back-up to get their cars "sniffed." Tubac is extra beautiful, with great weather, and you would be in Santa Cruz county, which would have advantages over Pima.

Traffic on I-19 is always light and the checkpoint doesn't slow it down much.

Sorry, Ginny . . . I'm gonna disagree with the others on this one.
With the crazies here in Southern Arizona, the commute from Tubac to Raytheon would be a booger. Finding a home in Southeast Tucson and visiting Tubac on the weekends makes more sense.
MY TWO CENTS WORTH.

Tubac is a little far, but I was working downtown for a little while and I have to tell ya it probably took me longer to get there from Houghton/Speedway than it did a co-worker of mine coming from Green Valley - all freeway and not a busy freeway.

My husband is crazy, so maybe he'll just fit right in with the flow of traffic.

So, we checked it out, and Tubac is too small and expensive, Rio Rico is just bizarre, so we are going to pick Sahuarita, Green Valley or Vail.
We will definitely be going to Tubac for shopping, dining, spa, golf, etc. We went to their Art Festival and had a great time, though the wind was unbelievable that day.
