Default Best place in tucson area for 'snowbirds?'

My father who is 63 is going to retire. He lives with his wife who is retired already in the twin cities area. We have looked for a place they can go in Arizona, to escape for the winter, that is not too far away from Tucson. Anybody suggest a senior center in Marana, Oro Valley or Cortaro?

I'm sure they can afford anything in that area. AND PLEASE DO NOT RECOMMEND GREEN VALLEY!

Default Retiring in Tucson

Heritage Highlands is an extremely nice place for retiring. It is at Dove Mountain in Marana AZ. Quiet gated community, golf, tennis, swimming, fitness center, All but the golf is included in HOA fees. I have shown homes there quite a few times, very nice, comfortable place to live. Wide range of floor plans and pricing on homes. Here is my web link for some of the Homes in Heritage Highlands for sale.

There are other choices also, Sunflower which is also in Marana, Sun City Vistoso in Oro Valley. Saddlebrooke, just north of Oro Valley, is another very popular spot with lots of golf etc. and fantastic views of the Catalina Mountains. I can get you links and more detailed information on any of these if you like, just let me know.

Hope this helps!

Rick

My 86 year old Mother lives at Sun City Vistoso in Oro Valley. Almost everything needed is within 3 to 6 miles of her home - groceries, shopping , hospital, medical offices. Most homes there are about 20 years old, and probably less expensive than Dove Mtn or Saddlebrooke. Dove Mtn and Saddlebrooke (north of Catalina) will require longer drives to and from most shopping needs than something in Oro Valley.

I would recommend they look for a 3 or 4 month rental just to see how they like the area before making the leap to buying. That would also give them a chance to explore the area and see what they like and what they don't like. Real estate in AZ has dropped a lot since the bubble burst, and will probably not increase much for several more years, so renting reduces the risk of buying something they might later regret. Plus, it is a hassle to own houses in two distant places at once.

Before my mother (and late step father) moved to Oro Valley, they rented a "park model" type small manufactured home in the winter season for many years in the Ajo Road / Kinney Road area on the southwest side of Tucson. It is a generally a less "upscale" residential area, but on the edge of beautiful Tucson Mountain park and near Saguaro National Park (west), also not far from "Old Tucson" studios. I personally like that area better than Oro Valley, but mainly because I don't like all the HOA rules and fees of the mega developments.

recycled makes a good point. Sun City Vistoso is definately closer to a wide range of amenities than the others. They are all great places to live, each with it's own character and charm. Come visit and check them all out and see what fits their lifestyle and needs.

I also am wondering why no Green Valley?

I'm not crazy about the area but I don't see it being any different than any of the other pre-planned, cookie cutter retirement towns.

No mention of Green Valley because the ORIGINAL posters question said they were not interested in Green Valley, but more in the Marana and Oro Valley areas. "AND PLEASE DO NOT RECOMMEND GREEN VALLEY!" from the original inquiry.
