Default Uh, stupid tax question...

I just finished doing my sister's taxes and she owes the state $91. I filed electronically (just now), but have to wait until it is accepted or rejected. I need to wait for this in order to print the voucher that gets mailed in with the check. (Federal - I was able to do an electronic debit for her) Probably won't have confirmation until tomorrow or Friday. Most e-file companies transmit Federal first, once accepted by the IRS, then they transmit the state return.

I know filing is due today, but what about payment? Can payment be mailed out Friday or does it still need to be postmarked today??

Forgive my 'silly' question. I always file in February, so I really have no idea.

I guess everyone's doing their taxes today and no one is here. I ultimately found a blank form that I can fill out for her and mail today.

In case anyone else needs it.

If you are mailing in your taxes(whether you owe or not), I believe they must be postmarked April 15. They have after-hours mailing stations. I remember doing my taxes at the last minute one time, and I had to drop them off at 10:00 p.m. at a station on Cherrybell, or Silverbell. I guess the drop off places are open until midnight.

Can anyone else contribute any info?

Definitely, and Thankfully, no expert here, TwoJuly . . .

However, I believe you need to FILE by the 15th and not PAY by the 15th. If my assumption is correct . . . you are ok. Were you not able to do "electronic debit" for Arizona?

On the flip side, the acceptance message shouldn't take all that long so possibly you'll be able to have the check postmarked by the end of today just to be safe.

Good Luck

I was able to electronic debit for Federal, not for State. I ended up printing the .pdf form and filled it out by hand. <gasp> . I dropped it off at the PO at 2, so she's all set even if it takes another day or two for AZ to accept the return.

Sorry, that I didn't answer this question on the 15th. I just saw it. For future reference.

If you e-file on April 15th and are awaiting confirmation that your electronic tax return was accepted, you should also mail in your full printed return and appropriate documents. The IRS will only process one of your returns (the one that they receive first). So if your e-filed return is accepted, they will simply toss out your mailed return when they get it. If your e-filed return is rejected, your mailed return is already on the way and you are good to go.

The biggest problem with waiting to mail in your full return (should you e-filed return get rejected), is that it will likely significantly delay your processing and could in some cases result in fines for those people who did not submit the appropriate supplemental forms.

Hope this helps.
