I looked through so many search engines but everything I found seems to be one of the three (1) not safe, (2) far away from the uni, and is somehow (3) not nice (it should have a cactus in the garden ) at least what I can tell from the pics. Any comments what I might do wrong and what I should try?

There really aren't too many choices for short-term housing, particularly meeting your requirement (to be close to U of A).

What comes to my mind is perhaps an extended-stay hotel (with kitchenettes). There is one on Grant, between Swan and Rosemont, on the South side. You'd probably consider it being too far.

Did you investigate vacation rentals? Just a quick glance at vacation rentals dot com for Tucson ( Tucson Vacation Rentals, Tucson Arizona Vacation Rental Homes, Tucson Condo Rentals, Tucson Vacation Rentals Deals, Tucson Last Minute Vacation Deals ) and I came up with what seems to be an affordable cutie of a cottage not far from the UofA and in a reasonably safe area ( Vacationrentals.com: 1 bedroom Cottage sleeps 2 in Tucson Arizona - Clean, CENTRAL, Affordable, Extended Stay Cottage INTERNET ).

There's plenty to look through. Best of luck!!!

There sure are (well, probably not near the airport unless we're talking motels with weekly/monthly rates). You just have to understand that vacation rentals are expensive.

We found our short term rental on Craigslist in the sublets/temporary section. We were on the west side a little out of the city. It was a great rural location, but only a 15 minute drive from the university, very safe and plenty of cacti. If you go on there, look for listings on Goret or Ironwood Hill Rd. The landlady has several casitas/apartments on the properties (2 former guest ranches). There is no lease... we rented weekly (turned into monthly, without a lease) and stayed for 4 or 5 months.
