Thanks very much all who posted!
Let's say you buy some cheap something, like a cheap tabletop fan for $15. Those things have the worst quality chrome parts and screws and everything - they're disposable. Will the screws and metal parts even start to rust? Will they look any different after a few years?
It's funny, here (Hawaii) stuff won't rust in my small air conditioned studio, I guess because it's dry in here and the air is filtered.
Check out the rust repair I just did to my Chevy (before and after):
And this one takes the cake: Yes, this was a Sears Kenmore, not Panasonic or something better, but holy smokes check out the ac I put in, this is at about 10 or 11 months old:

I think I just heard some jaws hit the floor!

KE-THUNK!
I heard that.
Normally my ac's look like that at about 2 1/2 years... this one broke all records. Funny thing was, the one I took out was a Panasonic, and when I put the Kenmore in, I noticed that it was not just similar, but identical to the Panasonic, except the case was a Kenmore.
So I think the case was ultra cheaply painted or maybe not galvanized or something. Funny, the ac still runs cold! I have a replacement a buddy gave me ready to put in but it's hard to pull a functioning ac out - I might as well use it until it doesn't work anymore.

I'm in MN but a few years back (like 7 years or so..) we were in Tucson with our old beat up car. Everyone kept asking what happened to cause it to rust... Our only answer was "We live in Minnesota.." Lots of "Ahhh, yes, snow country with lots of sand and salt to wreck cars!"

That a/c picture speaks volumes, Dinty.
Except for a short period after a heavy rain (primarily only during July and August), the condensation from either window or central air conditioners is usually a slight drip or none at all, not a steady flow that I've witnessed in Hawaii or the Southeast.

Have to say I'm not at all surprised (having made a half dozen trips to either Hawaii or the South Pacific). Rust is a fact of life in such places. Very informative pictures though.

Tell me about it!
About 10 years ago a customer brought in a ca. 1989 Nissan Pathfinder in for an alignment; I attempted to loosen/turn the tie rod ends to set the toe---------they sheared off even after using a torch and penetrating oil. The thing was from the Wash DC area.
